Lynnville-Sully baseball, softball teams notch SICL victories in different ways

Hawk softball goes 1-1 in home tourney

KEOTA — The long and short of it happened to Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams Friday playing in South Iowa Cedar League games at Keota.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team, newly ranked No. 9 in Class 1A, made short work of Keota’s Eagles, wining 22-0 in three innings. Carson Fisk threw a one-hitter as the Hawk girls won their ninth straight game.

On the baseball diamond, the Hawk boys were locked into a long seven innings against the Keota boys. They trailed 12-10 going into the seventh inning and scored six runs to take the lead, 16-12.

The Eagle boys had the last at-bat as the home team. A ground-rule double, a one-out walk and a two-out single produced a run for the Eagles. Another walk issued by Lynnville-Sully pitcher Blaize Kuhlmann loaded the bases, but Kuhlmann came right back to strikeout Jacob Wickencamp to end the game.

With the 16-13 win, the Hawk baseball team improved to 7-1 in SICL action and 8-3 overall. It has won four straight games.

Lynnville-Sully’s rally in the seventh inning came with two gone. Tyler Van Zante was hit by a pitch The Hawks followed with three consecutive singles from Bray Noun Harder, Rylan James and Kuhlmann. Kuhlmann drove in two runs to tie the game at 12-all.

Corbin James walked to load the bases again and Josh Dunsbergen responded with a two-run base hit. Caden Dunsbergen drove in two more runs with a triple.

Lynnville-Sully scored three runs in the first and single runs in the second and third for a 5-3 lead. The Hawks had a five-run fifth and were up 10-5 when the Eagles plated seven runs in the sixth to claim the 12-10 lead.

Kulhmann picked up the win on the mound working 1 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and two walks and struck out three batters.

Van Zante was the Hawks’ starting pitcher and he went 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on ninth hits and two walks. He had seven strikeouts. Josh Dunsbergen pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on four hits and two walks. He had three strikeouts.

Josh Dunsbergen was 3-for-5 with three singles. Caden Dunsbergen had a single and a triple. Carson Dunsbergen and Corbin James had two singles each. Hitting a single apiece were Elijah Collins, Noun Harder, Rylan James, Isaac Collins and Kuhlmann.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team scored 12 runs in the first inning against winless Keota. The Hawks had a nine-run second and scored one run in the third inning. Fisk struck out two batters in recording her pitching victory.

Brenna Lanser was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single. Fisk, McKinley Conover and Korinne Jansen each had a single and a double. Kaleah Ehresman hit two singles.

Mallory Loftus doubled. Haley James, Janelle Rozendaal and Shaleah Van Wyk had a base hit apiece.

Lynnville-Sully hosted a four-team softball tournament Saturday in Sully. Lynnville-Sully was 1-1 with a 12-1 loss to Class 3A Albia and a 7-6 win over 3A East Marshall.

There were no details on the two Hawk softball tournament games available by presstime.

Albia beat Des Moines Christian 10-0 and Des Moines Christian defeated East Marshall, 10-5.

Lynnville-Sully softball is 6-2 in SICL action and 10-4 overall.

The Hawk squads host Iowa Valley at 6 p.m. Monday in SICL games in Sully.
