Newton Trap Team competes in shoots

Newton Trap Team members competed in a trap shoot Saturday hosted by Grinnell. Another group of shooters competed in sporting clays and skeet at Pella on Saturday.

At Grinnell, the Newton varsity squad of Brian Bleakney, Devon Young, Nathan Tramel, Colton Kingery and Devon Hobbs combined for a team score of 197. The squad finished ninth out of 14 squads.

Young led the varsity with a high score of 46 broken targets to take 10th out of 74 shooters in the varsity men’s division. Other teams competing were from Cedar Rapids Prairie, Centerville, BGM, Montezuma, Sigourney, Ankeny, Nevada and Baxter.

Newton’s junior varsity squad of Brodee Vest, Malarie Zach, Landon Gearhart, Ryan Brown and Dylan Farver shot a 177 combined score for fifth place out of eight squads. Vest finished fourth out of 49 male shooters with a score of 46. Zach hit 33 targets to place second in the women’s junior varsity division.

In the competition at Pella, the Newton squad placed seventh in the sporting clays event led by Logan Zaabel with a 90-of-100 targets hit. Zaabel finished eighth out of 33 shooters in the varsity male division. Brooke Gifford hit 78 targets to place fifth out of 12 varsity female shooters.

Evan Cook recorded Newton’s best score in the skeet event. He had a 43 to place ninth out of 20 shooters.
