Newton High’s Cardinal bowling teams notched wins on their home lanes Monday against visiting Des Moines North’s teams.

The Cardinal boys were down to the Polar Bears 1,577-1,531 on pin count going into the Baker Games round. Newton rolled a combined 837 score for the Baker round to North’s 717 to win the varsity dual 2,368-2,294.

Newton’s girls were up by 27 pins — 1,263-1,236 — over Des Moines North after the individual games. The Cardinals had a 594 Baker Games score to North’s 564 and won the varsity dual 1,857-1,800.

“We are struggling to produce some decent scores at home,” Newton head coach Seth Banwell said. “All of the teams won today, but it was a battle. It was great to get the win, but we need to work on making consistent shots into the pocket.”

Reece Thurmond led the Newton varsity boys with a 340 on games of 153 and 187. Austin Johansen rolled a 310 (163-147) and Reid Miller bowled a 309 (175-134).

Zion Dickey finished with a 289 (149-140) and Cutter Benac had a 283 (126-147). Alx Frymoyer finished with a 270 (123-147). Newton had Baker Game scores of 136-187-148-181-185.

“The boy’s team improved its overall team total from last meet, and we out bowled North by 120 pins in the Baker round,” Banwell said.

Leading the Newton girls was Alicia Miller with a 282 on games of 132 and 150. Kayla Sopher finished with a 271 (125-146) and Lizzy Coyle rolled a 245 (122-123).

Alyssa White bowled a 242 (126-116) and Kaytie Hughes ended up with a 223 (104-119). Taylor Johnson had a 164 (86-78). The Newton girls’ Baker Games scores were 112-140-120-109-113.

“We practice on fairly dry conditions; when it’s time for meets we struggle making lane adjusts on fresh oil,” Banwell said.

Newton had three junior varsity squads — boys, girls and a co-ed — bowling Monday.

Junior varsity boys: 2,212 total; Sam Supino, 342 (145-197); Devon Young, 341 (206-135); Michale Hodnett, 331 (163-168); John Ladewig, 247 (128-119); Tayler Hernandz, 243 (127-116); Nate Keith, 241 (130-111).
