Newton freshmen roll past Grayhounds

BURLINGTON — Newton High’s freshmen overpowered host Burlington Friday night in a 55-22 victory. The NHS freshmen are 3-0 on the season.

“The boys were hungry and ready to go after a long trip. We dominated from the first snap and did not look back. We had over 560 yards of total offense, which is pretty incredible,” freshman head coach Trent Powers said.

Newton was up 36-14 over the Grayhounds by halftime.

Logan Cummins rushed for 236 yards on six carries. He scored three touchdowns for the Cardinals. Antonio Usry scored two touchdowns, rushing for 105 yards on seven carries.

Dylan Farver had four carries for 98 yards. He scored a rushing touchdown and ran for three 2-point conversions.

Farver caught the only two passes attempted by Cardinal quarterback Kyle Long. They totalled 36 yards and one was for a touchdown.

Leading the Cardinal defense were Lane Bach with 10 tackles and Dalton Altemeier with seven tackles. Destin Schroder made four tackles.

Jarrett Antle had a quarterback sack. Caydin Haroper and Jake Herbold each reocvered a burlington fumble.

“We still have some improvements to make and are looking forward to our next opportunity against Marshalltown,” Power said.

Newton plays at home against Marshalltown at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
