Volunteers needed for tree inventory project in Newton

The City of Newton is participating in a special program offered by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources called the Sustainable Urban Forestry Training and Assistance Program.

The program includes up to 40 hours of training for staff and volunteers, a complete tree inventory of the community, a community tree management plan and a tree planting event.

The city would like to invite volunteers interested in helping with the inventorying and learning more about tree identification and tree care to attend the educational sessions. Two sessions are scheduled for next week on Monday and Tuesday. The programs will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Newton Arboretum. Topics will include tree health and data collection on Monday, and more tree ID review and data collection on Tuesday.
