Applicants sought for unique Emerson Hough literacy tutor

Newton Daily News

The Newton Community School District announces its partnership with Iowa AmeriCorps’’ Reading Corps program to provide a reading tutor for Emerson Hough Elementary in 2016-17.

Starting in September, this literacy tutor will work one-on-one with K-3 children who need help learning to read. The tutor will receive extensive training to learn how to use prescribed literacy interventions and conduct weekly progress monitoring to ensure their students are on track to read at grade level by the end of third grade. Emerson Hough will have one tutor, who will work either full time (11 months) or part time (nine months).

The tutor will receive a monthly stipend from AmeriCorps, as well as a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans. The Education Award can be used for the tutor’s own college expenses, or if the tutor is age 55 or older, this award can be transferred to the tutor’s child or grandchild.

The application deadline is Aug. 30. To apply, go to goo.gl/yWm9QV. Tutors receive extensive training and support before and throughout their term of service, so an education degree isn’t required to be a successful candidate for Iowa Reading Corps.
