Tigerhawk softball rallies, gets walk-off victory

COLFAX — The English Valleys softball team made things tough on Colfax-Mingo on Monday night during South Iowa Cedar League play.

The Bears plated four runs in the first inning and then answered a five-run second by Colfax-Mingo with another four runs in the third.

English Valleys held that 8-5 lead through five innings, but the Tigerhawks rallied to tie it in the sixth and then junior Alivia Haley hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to help the home team escape with a 10-9 triumph.

The game featured 29 hits and 10 errors between the two teams. Colfax-Mingo had 16 hits but won despite committing six errors.

Five Tigerhawk batters had at least two hits in the win. Haley’s three hits, three RBIs and one walk led the way, but freshman Colbee Cunningham also had three hits and sophomore Rhiannon Haley and freshmen Braedynn Rawlins and Mackensie Brown each had two hits.

Rawlins finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Brown reached base four times with two hits and two walks and also scored twice and had two RBIs.

Cunningham started in the circle but didn’t factor into the decision after allowing six earned runs in three innings.

Junior Amy Russell tossed the final seven innings of relief. She fanned 11, walked three and surrendered one run on seven hits. She is now 6-3 on the season. Russell had one hit, one run, one RBI and two walks at the plate.

Colfax-Mingo improved to 12-6 overall and 8-2 in SICL play. English Valleys dropped to 2-8 and 1-6.
