NHS grad coaches Kuemper to state soccer

Ryan Isgrig, a 2007 Newton High School graduate, coached Carroll’s Kuemper Catholic High School boys’ soccer team to the 2016 Iowa Class 1A Boys’ State Soccer Tournament.

The third-seeded Knights pulled out a 1-0 win in overtime against Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union (17-2) in Thursday’s opening round. Kuemper’s Nick Auen scored the winner with six seconds left in the first overtime.

Kuemper qualified for the state tournament for the first time in its history. Isgrig is in his second season as the Knights’ head coach.

Knights (17-2) play GCGR (17-2) at 12:05 p.m. Friday in a 1A semifinal game on Field 6 at James C. Cownie Soccer Complex. GCGR beat Underwood 1-0 in Thursday’s action.

Top-seeded and undefeated Beckman Catholic beat West Liberty, 3-0, and Regina downed Pella Christian 4-1 in the other two 1A tournament openers Thursday. Beckman Catholic and Regina play at noon Friday on Field 9.

The semifinal winners meet at 12:05 Saturday at Cownie’s Field 9. The third-place game is at 11:10 a.m. Saturday on Field 6.
