Mustangs improve to 2-0 with win over South Tama

PRAIRIE CITY — On a night when the Prairie City-Monroe seniors returned from their Senior Trip, it was an eighth-grader who stole the show on the mound.

Derek Brown made his varsity debut in relief, and he got the win after striking out six and allowing no hits over the final three innings of the Mustangs’ 7-4 win against South Tama County in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Brown relieved senior Gunnar Davis, who allowed three runs in four innings. Davis struck out three, walked two and scattered six hits. Brown gave up an unearned run in the victory.

South Tama (0-1) led 3-2 after four innings. PCM rallied with a four-run fifth inning and added another run in sixth to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Senior Clay Cooper finished with one hit, one run, one stolen base, two walks and two RBIs in his season debut. Senior Austin Brown went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Juniors Sheldon Speers and Noah Clark both had two hits. Speers scored twice and walked once, while Clark had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

The Mustangs (2-0 overall, 1-0 in Heart of Iowa Conference play) will play their third game in three days at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Jewell. They return to HOIC play with a game against South Hamilton.
