Lynnville-Sully girls win Bear Classic Relays Class A title

BROOKLYN — Lynnville-Sully’s girls were two-for-two in track competitions last week. Their second straight team championship came Friday in the Class A division of the 2016 Bears Classic Relays hosted by BGM.

The Hawks piled up 107 points to win the Class A title. Lisbon was second with 97 points followed by BGM in third with 87 points. There were eight teams in the competition.

They had won a championship at Montezuma Tuesday.

“The girls knew coming into this meet that the competition would be a little stronger than Tuesday night,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Darin Arkema said. “We hadn’t seen a couple of teams since the first meet of the year. With only a week and a half before the conference meet, we talked about giving our best shot to see where we are.”

Lynnville-Sully won two events in the meet, but earned points in 14 events on its way to the team win.

Marissa Vos claimed the gold in the 3,000-meter run in 12 minutes, 37.22 seconds. She and Makayla Rozendaal finished second and third in the 1,500 meters in 5:58.35 and 6:04, respectively.

The Hawks’ 4x200-meter relay foursome of Kasiah Ehresman, Camryn Russell, Jataya Meyer and Brenna Lanser posted a first-place time of 1:52.40. Ehresman, Makenzy Rozendaal, Russell and Lanser combined for second in the 4x100 in 53.72 seconds.

Meyer ran second in the 200 meters in 28.83 seconds and fourth in the 100 meters in 13.88 seconds. Carson Fisk placed third in the 400 meters in 1:06.64.

Lynnville-Sully’s sprint medley relay team of Fisk, Lanser, Makenzy Rozendaal and Ehresman was second in 2:01.82. In the 4x400 relay race, the foursome of Hailey Scandridge, Mariah Vos, Ehresman and Fisk recorded a second-place time of 4:27.50.

Russell and Mariah Vos finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.01 seconds and 18.11 seconds. Mariah Vos took third in the 400 hurdles in 1:14.12. The two joined with Shelby Foster and Scandrdige to capture second in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:16.93.

Julie Ranch-Holm, Haley Breeden, Makayla Rozendaal and Emily Van Gorp combined in the 4x800 relay race, finishing fourth in 11:56.76. In the distance medley relay race, the Hawks’ team of Skyler Young, Shiloh Cunningham, Ranch-Holm and Shaleah Van Wyk took fifth in 5:10.49.

“I was excited to hear girls after their events or at the end of the meet be happy about a time or performance or some disappointed that it wasn’t better, but all knew there is more work to be done and didn’t act content,” Arkema said. “We had a number of season best performances, which is a good sign things are coming around, conditioning is improving and relay work is clicking.”

Lynnville-Sully competes at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the PCM girls’ invitational meet in Monroe then goes to Pella Thursday. The Hawks go back to Brooklyn for the South Iowa Cedar League conference meet May 3.
