BELLE PLAINE — Canyon Kuhlmann, Lynnville-Sully senior, and North Linn’s Seth Boss provided drama at the finish line in the two long distance races of Thursday’s Belle Plaine Boys Invitational Track and Field Meet.
Competing in the Class A division of the track meet, Kuhlmann pulled out a three-second win in the 3,200-meter race in front of Boss. Kuhlmann won in 11 minutes, 13.64 seconds with Boss finishing in 11:16.14.
The two runners had a much closer race in the 1,600 meters. Boss edged Kuhlmann at the finish line two-tenths of a second — 5:18.73 to 5:18.75. Lynnville-Sully sophomore Cody Gibbs took fourth in 5:29.69.
Lynnville-Sully finished second in the team standings in the Class A division. BGM won the Class A division title with 143 points with the Hawks amassing 139.5 points. There were seven teams in the division and the top six places in each event scored points.
Juniors Colton Arment and Ryan Hofer went 1-3 in the 110-meter high hurdle race. Arment won in 17.75 seconds, Hofer was third in 18.03 and BGM’s Kalovon Steffen was in between at 17.97. Hofer combined with senior Noah Engle, junior Caden Dunsbergen and freshman Gage Vander Leest to win the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:04.93.
Another close race came in the 100-meter dash.
Lynnville-Sully senior Sage Ehresman and Montezuma’s Jordan Bender were in the second heat after BGM’s Keegan James won the first heat in 11.92 seconds. It came down to tenths of a second again with Bender winning at 11.92 and Ehresman running it in 11.97 seconds. Bender and James tied for first and Ehresman placed third.
Ehresman claimed a gold medal earlier in the shot put, winning on a throw of 47 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Freshman Rylan James was seventh at 38-7 in the shot put. In the discus, Ehresman placed second at 137-3 and Engle was third at 132-5.
Sophomore Carson Dunsbergen ended in a tie for second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-6 while Hofer tied for fourth place at 5-2. Drake Ehresman, a freshman, tied for fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17-11 1/2 and sophomore Cayden Johnson was seventh at 17-2 1/2.
Kuhlmann finished fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:22.16 with junior Bryson Barnett was 12th in 2:44.21. Sophomore Elijah Collins took eighth in the 3,200 in 12:57.31.
Sophomore Corey McCoy grabbed the silver in the 400 meters in 53.49 seconds — less than a second behind the winner — and James was eighth in 1:00.10. Freshman Nate Stock took ninth in the 100 meters in 12.77. Sage Ehresman was eighth in 200-meter dash in 25.16 and Johnson was 12th in 28.14.
Freshman Tyson Vander Linden placed third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.29. Vander Leest was fourth in 1:04.31.
The Hawks’ 4x200-meter relay team of Engle, sophomore Sage Zylstra, senior Ross Van Wyk and junior Max Knapp turned in a second-place time of 1:38.91. Taking second in the 1,600 distance medley relay in 4:08.54 was the foursome of Knapp, McCoy, Vander Linden and Carson Dunsbergen.
Vander Linden, Vander Leest, Knapp and McCoy combined for third in the 4x400 relay in 3:47.51. The Hawks’ 4x100 relay team of Zylstra, Engle, Caden Dunsbergen and Van Wyk was fourth in 47.79 seconds.
Lynnville-Sully’s 4x800 relay team of Collins, Gibbs, senior Kyle Kramer and junior Luke Jones was fourth in 9:42.99. In a non-scoring 4x100 weight person relay, the Hawk foursome of Trevor Squires, Jesse Van Wyk, Aaron Van De Krol and Isaac Collins was second in 53.22 seconds.
Lynnville-Sully hosts its annual coed invitational track meet Tuesday. Action begin at 4:30 p.m. in Sully.
