DES MOINES — Newton High’s Connor Gholson and Prairie City-Monroe’s Logan Gilman were the leading scorers for their respective high school basketball teams. They also led their teams in other categories, driving the teams to success in 2015-16.
Gholson, a 6-foot-2 inch junior guard, was named to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Class 3A second team. Gilman, a 6-foot-3 inch senior forward, received INA Class 2A second-team honors. The INA boys’ all-state teams, which were selected Saturday, were released Tuesday.
Gholson earned a spot on the 3A second team as a utility player. The INA selects three back court players, three front line players and two utility players for first team, second team and third team in each classification.
Gholson led Newton in scoring with 461 points, which is a 19.2 points per game average. His scoring total was 12th in 3A and second in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Gholson moved to No. 5 on the Cardinals’ career scoring list with 882 points. The 461 points was the third best single season total for NHS, and his per game average is fifth best.
Gholson was Newton’s top 3-point field goal shooter, hitting 67-of-212 attempts, which was fourth in 3A. He is third on Newton’s 3-point field goals made in a season list and third in career 3-pointers made at 150.
Overall, Gholson shot 42 percent, 151-of-360, overall from the field. He shot 79.3 percent, 92-of-116, from the free-throw line. He was second on the team in free throw shooting behind sophomore Garrett Sturtz.
Gholson was second on the team in rebounding with a 123 rebounds — 114 came off the defensive glass. He led the Cardinals with 35 steals, which was tied for fifth in the conference, and had a team-leading 14 blocked shots. Gholson had 32 assists.
Gilman earned a place on the 2A second team as a front line player.
Gilman paced the PCM Mustangs with 466 points, which was 16th on the Class 2A scoring list for the season. He was third in scoring for the Heart of Iowa Conference.
His 21.2 points per game average was ninth among 2A players this season. Gilman’s average led the HOIC.
Gilman led his team in field goal shooting, 180-of-385 for 46.8 percent, in 3-point field goal shooting, 42-of-103 for 40.8 percent and free throw shooting, 64-of-96 for 66.7 percent.
Gilman was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with 167 — 121 were defensive rebounds. He led the team with 58 assists. Gilman had 23 steals.
Gilman scored more than 20 points 14 times this season. He had five double-doubles on the season.
The PCM senior finished his career with 1,377 points.
Linn-Mar’s Jordan Bohannon, a 6-foot-1-inch senior guard, was selected as INA’s Iowa Mr. Basketball.
Bohannon led 4A in scoring with 593 points for a 25.8 point per game average.
The University of Iowa recruit led 4A in 3-pointers made for the second straight season, 92-of-215 for 42.8 percent. He also went 121-of-131 from the free-throw line for 92.4 percent.
