Mojo Cycling gets fresh, new look

Spring cleaning came early for Joe Urias at Mojo Cycling. Urias took it to the next level by remodeling portions of his store, along with freshening up the overall look after five years in business.

“Five years in, and I just don’t think you can ever get bored or settle or get stagnate. You have to continue to move forward and do things for your customers otherwise you lose your edge and if you lose your edge you can lose your customers,” Urias said.

With new customers coming in from neighboring towns Monroe, Baxter, Colfax, Des Moines, Grinnell and Pella and from as far away as Council Bluffs and Eldora, Urias’ business has been booming and he wants to take that success into the future.

“My name is getting out there more and more and people hear about me. When people come in I want to be able to commit myself to that,” Urias said. “I don’t want to go stagnant or have my customers come in and feel like everything has come to a stop.”

After deciding to switch up the paint colors in the shop from a rich caramel to bright white along with getting new flooring in his office area, Urias decided to take a look at the store and see how the space could work better for him.

“After I painted, I started setting it back up and thought, why am I setting it up the same way I had it? I decided to do something different,” Urias said.

Urias decided to move the apparel to a more visible location where people often wait to be seen. Just in the short time since the move, Urias has already sold more clothing than in the entire previous year.

He is also working to keep new, up-to-date inventory in the shop, highlighted by new fat tire and electric bikes. The fat tire bike looks like a monster with over-sized wheels, ideal for snow conditions or dirt trails. The electric bike has an assist bike that operates on three levels to help move the rider forward.

“If you put it on low it will help you and assist you for up to 78 miles,” Urias said. “If you put it on high you can really get motoring pretty good and it is doing most of the work for you while you pedal.”

Urias is happy where he is in his business right now and is looking forward to the upcoming years in Newton.

“I think I’m going to have a great year this year. I’ve already had a great year and biking season hasn’t even really started yet,” Urias said. “Every year it gets bigger with more customers. Now, my customers are buying their third generation bikes. It’s good; life is good.”
