Cardinal girls finish perfect, boys lose to Pella

PELLA — Newton High’s bowling teams concluded their regular-season dual meets with a split Saturday against Pella at the Excit-A-Bowl lanes.

The Cardinal girls defeated Pella by 770 pins to chalk up an undefeated season, 10-0, which included going without a loss in Little Hawkeye Conference competition. Newton won 2,214-1,444.

Pella broke the Newton boys’ six match winning streak. The Cardinal boys dropped the LHC match with the Little Dutch, 2,769-2,514. Newton’s boys finish with a 7-3 dual mark.

Alyssa White paced the Cardinal girls with a 303 series on games of 139 and 164. Alexis Etter and Kayla Sopher came close to rolling a 300 series. Etter had a 298 (167-131) and Sopher had a 296 (138-158).

Fourth-best on the day for Newton was Lizzy Coyle with a 281 (161-120) followed by Alicia Miller’s 259 (131-128). Kaytie Hughes rolled a 243 (129-114). Newton’s Baker Games scores were 145, 151, 149, 190 and 142.

The Newton girls were without senior Madison Humphrey because of a death in her family.

Newton’s boys were led by senior Shea Carre with a 368 with games of 193 and 175. Reece Thurmond threw a 348 (186-162) and Reid Miller, who had the only 200 game of the day, finished a 325 (119-205).

Shaiden Simmons bowled a 317 (154-163) and Cutter Benac had a 289 (147-142). Sam Supino finished at 286 (140-146). The boys’ Baker Games scores were 185, 217, 165, 169 and 132.

Newton’s junior varsity bowlers finished their season with wins. The boys’ junior varsity went 9-1 with a 1,081-1,360 win Saturday. The Newton coed junior varsity team was 8-1, bowling unopposed Saturday.

“The junior varsity teams did very well this year,” Newton head coach Brett Jacobs said. “They only lost to Marshalltown in our first meet of the season.”

Newton’s varsity teams go to work practicing for the Little Hawkeye Conference meet on Feb. 13 at Val Lanes in West Des Moines. The Cardinals go back to Val Lanes Feb. 16 for their Class 2A district meet.
