Four Mustangs crowned champs at host tourney

MONROE — Junior Xavier Miller had his best match of the season, freshman Jarron Trausch wrestled the smartest bout of his young high school career and freshman Lucas Roland was in flat out “beast mode,” according to Prairie City-Monroe coach Cory Waddell.

Miller, Trausch and Roland all won their respective weight classes at the PCM Wrestling Invitational on Jan. 9.

Freshman Wes Cummings, despite not having his best weekend, also claimed the individual championship at 152 pounds as the Mustangs placed third in the 15-team tournament.

Roland and Trausch went 4-0 with four pins at 138 and 170, respectively, while Miller and Cummings went 3-0 at 145 and 152. PCM also got third-place finishes from Jakeb Fenton (106) and Chace Palm (113) and a sixth-place tally from Brycen Rogers (126).

Westwood won the team title with 187.5 points. Knoxville (158) edged PCM (150) by eight points, while Gilbert (131) and Pleasantville (123.5) rounded out the top five.

“Overall, I was extremely pleased. I was hoping for a top four, and we got third,” Waddell said. “Six of the 11 kids we had here were in the top three.

“Lucas Roland was a beast today. He only went to the second period once. He was on.”

Roland was impressive in winning his four matches by pin. His longest match came in the semifinals where he defeated Lynnville-Sully’s Sage Zylstra a minute into the second period.

Roland (24-2) needed 23 seconds to win his first-round match, 29 seconds in the quarterfinals and then took less than a minute to pin Saydel’s Oscar Ruiz in the finals.

“I finally put it all together. This was my first individual high school championship. I can’t describe how this feels,” Roland said. “I am pretty close to where I need to be.”

Miller (24-4) was the tourney’s two seed. He won his first match by fall then advanced to the championship match with a major decision.

In the title match, Miller defeated Pleasantville’s Griffen McBride, 5-2. McBride (9-2) was the top seed and a state qualifier last year.

Trausch (23-3) pinned his first three opponents in the first period. The championship match was a little tougher against Westwood’s Jeremiah Adams (27-5), but Trausch stuck him with 19 seconds to go in the match.

“He took excellent shots. He was calm and didn’t panic in the title match when it was 1-1,” Waddell said.

Cummings, who is ranked No. 8 at Class 2A 152, improved to 18-1 on the season. He won his first match by fall and then edged Pleasantville’s Sawyer Phillips, 3-2, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Cummings beat Saydel’s Devin Van Houten, 5-2.

“I have had better days, but I came out with wins. That’s all that matters,” Cummings said. “I just need to keep improving.”

Fenton improved to 17-11 on the season but is 13-2 at 106. His only loss on the day came against Colfax-Mingo’s Cauy Furgison in the semifinals. Furgison won the title and is now 24-2 on the year.

PCM sweeps HOIC double dual in Jewell

JEWELL — Injuries early in the season kept PCM from emerging as a Heart of Iowa Conference contender.

As the season moves along, the Mustangs are getting healthy and turning the tables against other HOIC opponents.

The Mustangs recorded a conference road sweep on Jan. 7 against South Hamilton and Greene County. PCM was handed five forfeit wins in a 64-18 victory over the host Hawks and then finished the night 2-0 after the Rams surrendered six forfeits during a 42-22 triumph.

The wins improved the Mustangs (7-13) to 3-3 in the HOIC. South Hamilton’s 30-27 win over Greene County pushed the Hawks’ conference mark to 4-2. Greene County dropped to 0-6 in the league.

Trausch had two pins on the night and was one of six PCM wrestlers to go 2-0. He had one of the four pins against the Hawks.

Also going 2-0 for the Mustangs were Roland, Miller, Fenton, Chance Palm and Rogers. Fenton (106) and Rogers (126) won both of their matches by forfeit.

The fourth win by fall against South Hamilton (5-2) came from Cummings. Cummings faced a ranked opponent in his second match but fell short against No. 4 Tommy Bradshaw, losing 10-5.

The loss by Cumming was his first of the season.

Drew Johnson (132), Nathan Trausch (182) and Chace Palm (113) all won matches by forfeit in the opener against South Hamilton.

Against Greene County (0-15), Roland, Miller, James Maggard (160), Fenton, Chance Palm and Rogers all took forfeits. Jarron Trausch’s win by fall was the only pin for the Mustangs.
