Hopefully for the last time in my life, I am moving. The word move has been added to the list of four letter words that aren’t to be spoken unless utterly necessary. I never moved growing up and the first time I lived somewhere other than my parents’ house was when I went to college.
That move, although emotional, was not nearly as stressful as moves to come. After college, my husband and I built our first house and the “move” to the house was not huge because we were mostly getting new things to fill the house. It wasn’t until we decided to move back to my hometown that we learned what moving really was.
To sell our house in a very competitive market, we had to do some work. We finished the basement, laid new flooring and painted a neutral color to appeal to anyone. Anything that wasn’t necessary to our daily lives was packed away and shipped to my parents house to help with clutter — even our dog. Although I was always happy when the realtor called to show the house, it was very stressful to have to keep it in show condition with two kids younger than age 2 to clean up after.
Finally, after several months on the market, we sold the house and were ready to head to our new home, which we had made an offer on months earlier. Then came the struggles with the mortgage. I think mortgage agents were put on earth to make my life miserable and full of stress. It didn’t matter how many times I asked a question, I always got different answers. I am amazed the deal even went through after having to jump through so many hoops.
We made it to our house and have been happy for the past year or so. We downsized to accommodate our life and that started to catch up with us over the winter. Our cute little house started to become small and cramped and our eyes began wandering to a new location.
A property I have always admired was put up for sale, and after months of planning, we decided to make a move for it. Luck was on our side and we were able to get the house, which, of course, meant we needed to sell our current house.
Wanting to avoid realtor fees, we decided to place a “for sale by owner” sign in our yard and see what happened. Our luck continued and after only a couple of weeks, we were able to pull the sign and mark our house as sold. Then the dreaded thought again came that we have to move all of our belonging again from one house to another.
We are currently right in the middle of moving boxes from our house to my parents house where we will be staying for a couple of weeks before we can move into our new house (thanks mom and dad!). Then, toward the end of July, we will once again move every possession we own — hopefully for the last time.
