Harris wins third straight LHC 110 hurdle title

PELLA — It is three times a champion for Newton High senior Deonne Harris.

Harris cruised to his third consecutive Little Hawkeye Conference title in the 110-meter high hurdles Monday at the 2015 annual conference track meet. Harris, who leads Class 4A and is fourth in the state overall, won the 110 hurdles in 14.58 seconds.

Newton teammate senior J.T. Thongvanh finished fifth in the race in 16.12 seconds. Harris ran second in the 400-meter hurdles at the conference meet in 57.95 seconds and junior Jake Bennett was eighth at 1 minutes, 2.38 seconds.

Harris, Thongvanh and Bennett combined with freshman Jaron Roush for second in the shuttle hurdle relay race. Newton completed the race in 1:00.89, just behind Grinnell’s 59.69 seconds finish.

Pella won the team championship with 192.50 points and Oskaloosa was second with 122 points. Dallas Center-Grimes took third with 108.50 followed by Norwalk with 99 points and Grinnell with 80 points.

Newton finished sixth in the team ranks with 67.50 points. Pella Christian, the host school, scored 22.50 points.

Freshman Matthew Karsten turned in a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 11.69 seconds. Freshman Josh Miravalles was 13th in 12.64 in the 100 and finished 12th in the 200 in 25.67 seconds. Freshman Clayton Baltisberger was 10th in the 200 meters in 25.52 seconds.

Newton senior Christian Laube placed fourth in the 1,600 meters in 4:47.73 and Mikey Bradley, a freshman, was ninth in 5:01.08. Laube finished seventh in the 800 meters in 2:13.07.

Freshman Jack Callaghan scored a team point in taking eighth in the 400 meters in 54.85 seconds. Senior Collin Jacobson ran 13th in 1:09.79.

Oskaloosa’s Spencer and Skylar DeJong tied for first in the 3,200-meter run. The twin brothers each posted a winning time of 10:09.98.

Newton’s 4x100 relay team of Callaghan, Thongvanh, Karsten and Harris turned in a fourth-place time of 45.95 seconds. Bennett, senior Harrison McCarey, Callaghan and Karsten combined for fifth in the 4x400-meter relay race in 3:54.32.

Senior Mason Bowes claimed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 4.5 inches. Landon Hansen, a freshman, was seventh with a toss of 40-5.0. Freshman Jace Lukefahr was seventh in the discus with a throw of 116-6 and Bowes placed ninth at 106-3.

The Cardinals’ 4x800 relay foursome of Callaghan, Bradley, freshman De’Andre Roush and Laube was fifth in 9:16.54. The distance medley relay team of Carson Cazett, Miravalles, McCarey and freshman Dylan Main was seventh in 4:23.36.

Newton’s 4x200-meter relay team of McCarey, Cazett, Jaron Roush and Karsten placed seventh in 1:44.54.

The Cardinals compete at home Thursday in the annual Cardinal Relays. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Teams to compete are Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter, Lynnville-Sully, North Mahaska, Prairie City-Monroe, Pleasantville and Southeast Warren.
