OTTUMWA — Newton High’s Jacob Smith, Duncan Lee and Caleb Kite knew where the Cardinals stood as a team headed into their matches of Thursday’s dual with Des Moines Lincoln. The Cardinals trailed 36-24.
Work had to be done, and this trio did it on the mat for the NHS wrestling team. Jacob Smith rallied from a 7-6 deficit to claim a win at 182. Jacob Smith used an escape and takedown in the third period to beat Des Moines Lincoln’s Keyontae Boutchee, 9-7.
Lee and Kite provided the final 12 points to Newton’s 39-36 non-conference dual win over Des Moines Lincoln. Lee pinned Justin Worthington at 195 pounds and Kite won by a fall over Mateo Toledo in the 220-pound match.
Newton went 1-1 in non-conference action Thursday at the Ottumwa double dual. The Cardinals dropped a 49-19 decision to host Ottumwa Bulldogs.
“Overall, I think that we wrestled pretty well,” said Andy Swedenhjelm, Newton head coach. “The Des Moines Lincoln dual, in particular, was a great team environment to be in. It was great to see some kids that have been working really hard step up and help to win a dual for us.”
Against Des Moines Lincoln, Caden Manning began the dual for Newton with a pin of Aaron Cosper in the 285-pound match. The Cardinals won the first three matches as Aren Sorensen won with a pin of Ken Ly at 106 then Hunter Versteegh claimed a 10-2 major decision over Conner Dalton.
Des Moines Lincoln took a 24-16 lead by winning four straight — two by falls and two by forfeits.
Back-to-back major decisions wins for Newton tied the dual up. Bryce Tish had a 12-3 win over Adolphe Simon at 145 and Brady Smith posted a 13-3 victory over Shaoah Miller. The Cardinals lost the next two matches by falls, putting Des Moines Lincoln up by 12 points.
“It is awesome to see some unheralded kids such as Aren Sorensen, Jacob Smith, Caleb Kite, and Caden Manning get big wins for us,” Swedenhjelm said. “It bodes well for us and is a testament to those kid’s work ethics.”
Sorensen and Versteegh had the Cardinals in front of Ottumwa, 9-0. Sorensen pinned Nathannel Shoemaker in 3 minutes, 24 seconds in the 106 match. Versteegh fell behind Alec Clark 4-3 after the first period, but had a reversal in the second to go up 5-4 and he held on for a win by that score in the 113-pound match.
The Bulldogs took a big bite, winning the next five matches to take control. 25-9. Brady Smith and Tristin Langmaid came up with one-point victories — 12-11 and 9-8, respectively — for Newton at 152 and 160.
Ottumwa added to its 25-15 lead with pins of Harley Walker and Jacob Smith at 170 and 182. Lee rolled up a 14-0 major decision against Zain Lay in the 195-pound match for Newton. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs had back-to-back pins of Kite and Manning at 220 and 285 to close the dual.
“The thing I really like about this team is they go out and leave it all on the mat It is great to see some kids make some big improvements so far this year,” Swedenhjelm said. “I think that it is sometimes hard to appreciate how hard a lot of our kids have been working when you don’t see the results reflected in the win and loss column, but we have been growing a ton, and I am very excited about the future of our program.”
Newton goes to the Centerville Invitational Saturday.
In junior varsity action Thursday. Justice Borger defeated Ottumwa’s Keaton Gorden 10-4 at 145, Noah Hammer pinned Trey Knight and Colton Burgess of Ottumwa in 152-pound matches. Blayden Rhone was pinned by Tucker Shepard of Ottumwa.
