HUXLEY — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s Mark Deutsch, Prairie City-Monroe’s Rachel Peter and Colfax-Mingo’s Dakota Hostetter all delivered strong performances at the Ballard Invitational cross country meet Monday, landing them among the top-five finishers of their races.
Deutsch and Peter both finished second and Hostetter came in third.
Deutsch recorded his third second-place finish of the season by posting a time of 17:41 in the Varsity C Boys race.
“Individually, Mark had another great race,” CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts said. “He took the lead early in the race, but just couldn’t hold on. He’s running well right now.”
Deutsch helped the Raiders to a fifth-place finish as a team with 143 points. Meinerts said the team entered the meet with the goal of having all seven of its runners post times under 20 minutes and six accomplished that goal.
Prairie City-Monroe also ran in the Varsity C race and ended 12th out of 12 teams with 332 points. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura won the team title with 48 points.
In the Varsity C Girls race, Peter edged out South Hardin’s Claire Damon by two seconds for second place. Peter finished in 16:04 after she sat out the Johnston Invitational last week due to an illness.
PCM’s girls placed fourth with 119 points, edging out CMB, which finished fifth with 134 points. Heather Jessen and Winter Brown both had strong showings for the Raiders as they both finished in 17:34.
Hostetter was also absent from the Johnston meet for Colfax-Mingo and posted a time of 16:20 on Monday.
Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully finished third and fifth, respectively, in the Varsity D Girls’ division of Monday’s meet.
The Tigerhawk girls had a score of 93 for third behind first-place Panorama with 23 points and second-place BCLUW with 82 points. Lynnville-Sully scored 105 points of fifth in the eight-team field.
In the Varsity D Boys’ division, Nodaway Valley posted a winning score of 23 points. Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks were eighth with 188 points and Colfax-Mingo took 11th with 293 points.
“Ballard is one of my favorite meets each year. It’s a good course, a big meet atmosphere, and strong competition against schools our size,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully head coach. “The kids like it as well, and historically we compete well here. This year was more of the same.”
Arkema said all the Hawk varsity girls had season-best times Monday, stepping up to his challenge to race out of their comfort zone. He said the Lynnville-Sully varsity boys had two runners — Lucas Jones and Nick Lirio — run almost a minute faster on the course than a year ago.
Lynnville-Sully’s girls had two place in the top 20 led by Cori Rice in 13th, running the 4K race in 17:45. Madison Rasmusson was 18th in 18:25.
Canyon Kuhlmann of Lynnville-Sully finished 11th in the varsity boys’ 5K race in 18:35.
Jonathan Jacobs paced Colfax-Mingo for the second straight meet. The freshman finished 47th in 21:05. The Tigerhawks placed 11th out of 11 teams in the Varsity C race.
Colfax-Mingo and Prairie City-Monroe joins Lynnville-Sully Thursday at the Lynnville-Sully Invitational on the Diamond Trail Golf Course in Lynnville. The high school girls’ race is at 4:30 p.m. followed by the high school boys’ race at 5 p.m. and the junior high (boys and girls) at 5:30 p.m.
