Insane Jane excited for second chance to play at Thunder Nites

Last year, Insane Jane’s Thunder Nite performance was spoiled by the rain. The band attempted to perform, but only managed to finish six songs.

“I wanted to cry,” Insane Jane lead singer Tanya Smith said. “I knew I couldn’t control anything that was going on, but all I wanted was to perform.”

This Friday, Insane Jane will be given a second chance to perform for Thunder Nites.

“When (Weekend Pit Stop Executive Director) Libbie (Marshall) told me we were one of the bands chosen, I had a smile on my face all day,” Tanya said. “I’m thrilled to get a second chance to play at Thunder Nites.”

Insane Jane has a long history in Newton as the band played it’s first gig in Newton.

“I have always loved Newton, as we played our first gig at Auggies,” Tanya said.

The band has had its struggles through its 11-year history, with many members leaving the group.

“The original members and I are still best friends,” Tanya said. “Sometimes it work, health or family, that causes bands to go through members.”

At one point, Tanya found herself without a band and she truly needed a hero. That is what she got in Small Town Superheros. Now, Insane Jane includes bass player Dr. John Hoekstra, drummer Terry DeJong, keyboardist Tim DeJong and guitarist Bob Edwards.

“The guys and I just love playing the music because, in the end, no matter if it’s Insane Jane or Small Town Superheros, the only difference is a different set list and a different lead singer,” Insane Jane and Small Town Superheros bass player Dr. John Hoekstra said.

Tanya has always had a passion for playing classic rock song but has been adding songs from new musical talent as well.

“I love to sing classic female rock songs but enjoy playing male rock songs such as Skynard and Guns & Roses,” Smith said. “I also love playing Katy Perry, but in the end we just want people to dance, have fun and enjoy the experience because we will be doing the same thing on stage.”
