100 Years Ago This Week – Sept. 29-Oct. 5, 1913
E. M. Buckner's Colored Ragtime Opera Singers gave their first entertainment at Lister's Opera House Sept. 29. They apparently were well received by the house, which "encored [them] time after time." The Daily News reviewer considered they put on a good comedy sketch and characterized their singing as excellent. . . . It was announced on Sept. 30 that Newton will have another novelty-manufacturing works. (Note: Newton Manufacturing Company and Advertising Novelty Manufacturing Company (now The Vernon Company) were already making advertising novelties at this time.) J. M. Flitcraft, a St. Charles, Iowa man, set up shop in the rooms at the rear of the Western Stock Remedy Company. He will manufacture metal novelties in the Keystone Garage building. . . . George Eggert, who resides just south of Newton, conducted a horse show Oct. 4 at the Feed Barn on 1st Avenue East. Eggert is one of the largest breeders and importers of fine horses in this part of the state. He offered $75 in prize money for the five best colts.
