Familiar faces in victory lane on Zylstra Harley Davidson and KMJ Performance Night

MARSHALLTOWN — Mother Nature tried to play spoiler in the afternoon, but she had no affect on the races, which went on with out a problem.

The fans that braved the somewhat troublesome weather saw some amazing races all night long.

John Gill grabbed the early lead in the IMCA sport compacts feature after taking off the week before. Gill led until Merv Chandler made his way up to take the lead on Lap 4. Gill got the lead back on Lap 5, but Chandler took it back on Lap 6 Chandler and Gill battled out the remaining laps with Chandler taking his eighth win of the season. Gill finished in the runner-up position, Chad Larson finish third, and Josh Keller was fourth.

In the Toby K’s Hideaway mod lites feature, it was Travis Brandt claiming the early lead. Brandt held on to the lead until Charlie Brown snuck by on Lap 4 when Brandt slipped up. Brown was out-front while Josh May, Andy Hennigar, Dusty Masolini and Jimmy May raced for position. Finally, Josh May chased down Brown and tried to get by on the last lap but came up short by inches at the line. Brown admitted in victory lane that his car had slid up, and he had no idea that May was there. Masolini, Hennigar and Brandt rounded out the top-five.

The Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA hobby stocks feature saw Jason Cox on the lead, but the caution waved on Lap 2. On the restart, Cox dealt with Eric Larson, Jennifer Hulin, Shannon Anderson and Jacob Keiser.

Cox held on to the lead, meanwhile Anderson worked his way by and eventually grabbed the lead on Lap 4. Anderson went on to take his first win at Marshalltown. Larson came home in second, Hulin was third, Bill Bonnett was fourth and Eric Stanton was fifth.

Shawn Simatovich led the first lap in the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA sport mods feature, but it was Tom Rawlins taking the lead away on Lap 2. Rawlins lost the lead to Bill Hildreth on Lap 4. Hildreth then lost the lead on Lap 5 to Brad Iverson. Just after Iverson took the lead, the caution waved for debris on the front stretch. and Joel Rust worked his way up to steal the lead away on Lap 8. Rust appeared to be heading on to the win until lap traffic slowed him down, allowing Iverson to catch up. Iverson took the lead back and headed the field all the way to the finish. Brandon Brinton snuck by Rust on the last lap to finish second. Eric Elliott started 20th and finished fourth, and Jayme Duinink finish fifth.

Robbie Merkle led the opening lap in the Amsoil IMCA stock car feature, but Jeff Wollam claimed the lead on Lap 2. Wollam and Tracy Gienger collided in Turn 2, giving the lead back to Merkle. On the restart, Merkle lost the lead to Jay Schmidt, and just after Lap 3 was in the books, Wollam’s car got flipped over, but he would be okay. Schmidt got a great restart after the caution on Lap 6 and tried to pull away, but Murty didn’t let him, as he was glued to Schmidt’s back bumper. Schmidt held off challenges from Murty and Steve Meyer on the restart after a caution to take his sixth win of the season. Meyer worked his way up to take second after starting 22nd. Dave Atcher got by Murty for third, and Merkle finished fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA modifieds feature, which saw some great four-wide racing in the early going. Kyle Krampe jumped out to the lead, and he held on to the top spot until Lap 11, when Ron Lauritzen took the lead away. Lauritzen looked like he was cruising on to the win while Cayden Carter, Jon Snyder and Josh Truman raced for position behind him, but just after the white flag displayed, the caution came out, forcing a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Jon Snyder stole the lead away from Lauritzen and went on to take his fourth win in four weeks. Carter grabbed second from Lauritzen. Racer Hulin took fourth, and Josh Truman was fifth.

Next week will be J&V Napa Auto Parts Night at the Speedway. Grandstands are $9 for Adults, Children 11 and under cost $2. Hot Laps start at 7 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
