Sugar Grove Ladies

The Sugar Grove Ladies Farm Bureau Club held their April meeting at the Beverly Curtis home. President Barbara Gannon presided over the business meeting, which included devotions, a treasurer’s report and minutes of the previous meting. Roll call was answered with the name of a favorite magazine. The Iowan was one of the most favorite magazines.

An article fro the American Legion magazine reminded members to never forget the troops that never came home. The Department of Defense lists 73,681 from World War II, 7947 from the Korean War, 126 during the Cold War, 1,657 from Vietnam and six from Iraq and other countries. Some lie in unmarked graves, some were taken captive and probably died, some are honored in cemeteries in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Pearl Harbor. The article detailed the significance of the small memorial table, the articles placed upon it, the empty chair and the MIA flag commemorating those who have never returned. “Lest We Forget”

Alice Beatty led a discussion on how older members have difficulty climbing steps. Members voted to have meetings in places like the library that have no steps to climb. Pennies for Friendship were collected.

Beverly Curtis presented a program on the importance of the Missouri River. She and her husband Bruce recently enjoyed an overnight trip on the river, and she described the sights along the way — the scenery, the many loaded barges waiting to go through the locks. She emphasized the importance of the river to farmers, whose grain and other crops are shipped to the Gulf. The river suffers from pollution from run off of chemicals along the way, resulting in a dead zone in the water of the Gulf.

Members enjoyed refreshments served by Curtis.

Colette Hill will host the May meeting.
