There was a Newton 1-2 finish in the IMCA Super Nationals at Boone Speedway on Saturday night in the Modified Division, as Richie Gustin of Gilman led all 40 laps in the 19G car owned by Newton’s Jim Reeder. Finishing second was Newton driver Mike Van Genderen in his best Super Nationals finish ever.
Gustin become the highest paid Modified champion in IMCA Super Nationals history, earning $5,700 for the victory. Richie is the brother of Jimmy Gustin, who was the Modified champion a year ago. Twenty-four states were represented in a record 843 entries for the 29th annual Super Nationals. All four champions crowned Saturday were first-time winners in their respective divisions.
Scott Davis was the photo finish winner of the Sport Mod feature, beating Jesse Sobbing in one of the closest races in Super Nationals history. Davis also became just the third driver to win IMCA Super Nationals titles in two different classes. He won the Stock Car crown in 1998.
