MARSHALLTOWN — The Newton boys soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss at Marshalltown on Thursday night, pushing its record to 2-4 on the season.
The Bobcats led 2-0 at halftime, and then freshman forward Jose Martin Chavarria scored three of his four goals in the second half to finish with four scores in his varsity debut and the season-opener for Marshalltown.
Bobcats junior forward Ty Steffenson broke a scoreless tie in the 13th minute of the game, cleaning up a rebound after Newton goalie Aaron Tinnermeier stopped a shot from Tyler Cruikshank.
A well-placed pass from Cruikshank in the 30th minute enabled Chavarria to score his first of the night, and the rout was on. Three minutes into the second half, Chavarria headed home a crossing pass from Josh Illum for a 3-0 lead, and a mishandled save of Agustin Ortiz’s shot slipped away from Tinnermeier and Chavarria converted the chance for the hat trick.
Marshalltown added five more shots on goal after Chavarria’s fourth goal, while the Cardinals managed only three for the game.
Newton will have a week off before it plays at Pella on Thursday.
