PCM boys win road quadrangular at L-S

Farver leads Mustangs to third at Des Moines Christian

LYNNVILLE — A dominating night on the golf course led PCM’s boys golf team to a road victory on Friday.

The Mustangs placed five golfers in the top nine positions and finished six strokes in front of Albia at the par 36 Diamond Trail Golf Club.

PCM won the quadrangular with a 152. Albia’s 158 was next followed by Keota’s 162 and host Lynnville-Sully’s 176.

Easton Van Veen led PCM as the runner-up medalist. He shot a 1-over-par 37, while Charlie Ford and Nick Farver finished 3-4 with career best 38s. Van Veen’s 37 also was a career best.

Tate Tangeman and Pete Kiernan had the other counting scores in eighth and ninth, respectively. They both shot 39s and Jeffrey McDanel had a non-counting 47. Kiernan’s 39 was a career best.

The host Hawks were led by Lucas Sieck’s 42. Carson Maston (career-best 43), Keegan DeWitt (44) and Deven Liekweg (47) had the other counting scores.

Van Veen’s round included seven pars, one birdie and a double bogey on his final hole. Ford tallied six pars, one birdie, one bogey and one double bogey and Farver finished with five pars, one birdie and three bogeys.

Tangeman had four pars, one birdie and four bogeys. Kiernan’s up-and-down round featured three pars, two birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.

Van Veen, Ford, Tangeman and Kiernan all birdied the par 5 No. 2.

Trent Nickelson and Konner Bell both shot 41s to lead the PCM junior varsity team.

Albia’s Cael Schofield was the meet medalist with a 35.

Farver leads Mustangs to third at Des Moines Christian

GRIMES — Farver turned in a season-best score to lead PCM to a third-place finish at the Des Moines Christian Invitational on Thursday.

The Mustangs edged the host Lions on a windy day at the par 72 Jester Park Golf Course.

Farver’s season-best 82 placed him seventh overall, while Van Veen finished 12th with an 86. Farver had identical 41 splits.

Panorama won the tournament with a 330, edging runner-up Treynor (331) by one stroke. PCM was next with a 345 and Des Moines Christian and Greene County completed the top five with 346s.

Pleasantville (351), Hampton-Dumont (362), Earlham (366) and Coon Rapids-Bayard (366) finalized the nine-team field.

McDanel (88) and Kiernan (89) had PCM’s other counting scores, while Ford (89) and Tangeman (93) posted non-counting scores.

McDanel shot 41 on the back nine, Kiernan carded a 42 on the front and Van Veen had a 42 on the back.

Treynor’s Ethan Konz was the medalist with a 76 and Panorama’s Evan Powell shot a 77 as the runner-up medalist.

The Panthers placed their four scoring golfers in the top 15. Treynor had three in the top 11.

Mustangs open season at Bondurant-Farrar

ALTOONA — PCM opened its season against some of the top squads in Class 3A on Monday.

The Mustangs shot 11 strokes better than their previous year’s average, but it was only good enough for a fourth-place finish at the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational.

Golfers played the white tees at the par 71 Terrace Hills Golf Course and Van Veen opened his junior season with a 2-over-par career-best 73.

Van Veen’s round included four birdies, six bogeys and eight pars. He finished fourth in a strong field. Five golfers shot 73.

PCM carded a 317 in fourth. North Polk won the tournament with a 299, while Gilbert (307) and Nevada (311) were second and third, respectively.

Gilbert finished third at least year’s 3A state tournament. South Hamilton (344) and Bondurant-Farrar (347) completed the field.

Tangeman finished 15th with an 80 and Ford was 16th with an 81. Kiernan and Farver both shot 83s for the final counting score. Nickelson’s varsity debut featured an 89.

North Polk’s Dyllon Ireland was the meet medalist with a 1-under-par 70 and Joey Currans of Gilbert shot a 73 as the runner-up medalist.

The Comets finished first after placing its top three scorers in the first six positions and Gilbert was 2-8-11-12. Nevada also had three in the top 10.
