NEWTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

  • Scott W. Cupples, 21, of Newton was arrested at 9:21 p.m. Wednesday at his residence at 201 W. Ninth St. N. on a Jasper County warrant issued that same day for failure to appear in court for an initial hearing on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
  • Christina M. Currier, 29, of Newton was arrested at 12:59 a.m. today at her residence at 220 E. 28th St. N. #105 on an Altoona Police Department warrant for failure to appear in court for proceedings on a theft charge. She also was wanted on a mittimus to serve a jail sentence from a fifth-degree theft conviction in Jasper County. She was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
  • Bryan C. Odem, 24, of Newton was charged Thursday with driving while license barred after authorities responded to a report of a gas theft from Newton 66 and then located the suspect vehicle shortly after in the 400 block of South Eighth Avenue East. Odem returned to Newton 66 to pay for the gas but was charged for allegedly driving without a valid license. He also was cited with failure to have insurance and was released on his own recognizance.
  • Benjamin C. Seaman, 15, of Newton was charged Thursday with simple assault following an investigation by authorities into an incident reported at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 20 at Newton Senior High School. Seaman was charged for allegedly pushing a 16-year-old Newton male from behind in the school hallway, causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor. Seaman was referred to Juvenile Court Services.
  • A 9-year-old Newton male was charged Wednesday with simple assault in connection with an incident reported at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday by Woodrow Wilson Elementary School officials. The boy was charged for allegedly assaulting a 55-year-old Pella woman by swinging his arm and hitting her wrist when she attempted to guide him into the school building for misbehaving during recess. The boy was referred to Juvenile Court Services.
  • Authorities recovered a Next Static bicycle at 3:40 p.m. Thursday at 407 E. 21st St. S. The bike may be identified and claimed at the Newton Police Department.
  • JASPER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

  • Joseph N. Tills, 34, of Des Moines was arrested at 1:16 a.m. Monday and charged with disorderly conduct after authorities received a complaint of a possibly intoxicated passenger on a Greyhound bus who did not have a ticket and was bothering other passengers. The bus pulled off the roadway at the 159 mile marker of Interstate 80, and the bus driver and suspect were standing outside the bus when officials arrived at the scene. Tills had bloodshot and watery eyes and displayed poor balance. He was charged for allegedly causing a disturbance on the bus and transported to the Jasper County Jail.
  • A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
