Cardinals drop road game against Boone

BOONE — A victory still eluded Newton High’s Cardinal softball team in a road non-conference game Tuesday. The Cardinals lost 8-2 to host Boone.

Boone (7-7) scored a run in the first inning, plated two more in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Toreadors pushed across four runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to expand their lead over the Cardinals to 8-0.

Boone’s Emma Dighton had two home runs — one in the third and one in the fourth — to lead it’s 10-hit attack. Emily Adams held the Cardinals to four hits and struck out 10 batters.

The Cardinals (0-11) got single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Kya Butler singled in the sixth and eventually scored on a passed ball.

In the seventh, Vanessa Vasseau drew a leadoff walk and Jenna Smith singled with one gone. Butler walked and Chassidy Henwood reached on an error as the run scored.

Kallie Van Kley was the losing pitcher for Newton. She allowed 10 hits, walked six and hit one batter. The Newton defense committed three errors.

Hitting a single each for the Cardinals were Malarie Zach, Jazzlyn Cooper, Smith and Butler.

Newton hosts Class 5A No. 7 Indianola in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Newton Softball Field. That concludes the Cardinals’ action for the week.

The Cardinals will play at Class 1A No. 5 Wayne on July 6. Senior Night for the Cardinal softball team will be July 8 when the Cardinals host Pella in a LHC contest.
