Sully Freedom Fun Run/Walk is July 4

SULLY — Celebrate the Fourth of July by participating in the 25th Annual Sully Freedom Fun Run/Walk. The 2020 event is a go for July 4 in connection with Sully’s Fourth of July Celebration.

Race director Darin Arkema pointed out there will be a number of changes taking place for this year’s event in an attempt to follow current public health guidelines and allow organizers the ability to hold an in-person event.

The one mile run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5k run/walk will start at approximately 8:20 a.m. A free kid’s run around the square will be at 9:10 a.m. for ages 8 and under. Awards ceremony will follow.

The kid’s run is free, but parents must sign a waiver at the packet pick-up table by 9 a.m.. Proceeds from this year’s race will go toward the Lynnville-Sully cross country and track teams.

All the races will start and finish on the square in downtown Sully. Entry fees are $10 for the 1-mile race and $15 for the 5K if registered by June 17 at 10 a.m. Race fees increase to $20 for the 1-mile race and $25 for the 5K if registered by July 1 at noon.

There will be no registrations for the event after July 1. T-shirts are only guaranteed for those who have registered by June 17.

Here are the changes in effect for the 2020 event:

• All participants must be pre-registered for the races. There will be NO race day walk-up registrations.

• All registrations will take place on-line via runsignup.com. No mail-in registrations. This is being done in case health guidelines or Governor proclamations change and refunds would need to be given.

• The maximum number of people that will be allowed to register for the event is 500. This is a total number of both races combined.

• Both races may have wave or tiered starts so we can provide social distancing at the start.

• Race packet pick-up on Friday night, July 3 (time and location to be announced) and race morning on July 4. We want to encourage local participants to pick up Friday night to reduce the lines, crowds and wait time on race morning. Race day packet pick-up will be from 6:45-7:45 a.m. at the square.

• There will not be any door prize drawings after the race. This is being done to provide social distancing and reduce financial strain on businesses who have been shut down due to guidelines.

A commemorative plaque will be given to the first three overall males and females in the 5K and to the overall male and female winners in the 1-mile run. Age group medals for both males and females will also be given in the 5K.

In order to get all awards out to participants, stay around after the race for the awards’ ceremony, while maintaining appropriate distancing between individuals and families.
