PCM basketball sweeps rival Saydel

MONROE — Lilli Baird tied a school record, Paige Steenhoek scored a career-high and Prairie City-Monroe’s girls’ basketball team buried 11 3-pointers in a 67-21 win over Saydel on Jan. 21 during Heart of Iowa Conference action.

The Mustangs led 16-8 after one quarter, led 42-14 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 17-2 in the third quarter.

“It was nice to get the offense going early,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said.

Regan Freland had 21 points, eight steals and three assists, Baird put in 18 points on a school-record six 3-pointers and Steenhoek scored a career-high 11 points off the bench.

Baird also had four steals and Steenhoek added three assists and two steals off the bench.

“We showed much better patience on offense and moved the ball well,” Lindsay said. “We were more fluid.”

Emma George added seven points, six assists and three steals, while Kate McCarthy chipped in five points, five rebounds and four blocks. Freland and Steenhoek both drained a pair of 3-pointers and PCM swiped 20 steals.

“Defensively, we did a much better job communicating,” Lindsay said. “We anticipated well and moved better with each pass.”

PCM (5-8 overall, 3-5 in conference) snapped a five-game losing skid. The Mustangs host South Hamilton at 6 p.m. on Friday in Monroe.

Saydel dropped to 0-13 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

Saydel 53, Saydel 32

PCM’s boys’ basketball team used a fast start to defeat Saydel in HOIC action on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs led by eight after one quarter and by 17 at halftime and cruised to a 53-32 home win over the Eagles.

There were a total of five points scored in the third and PCM (8-5, 5-3) won the fourth quarter 14-11.

Jason Stafford had 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists and Derek Brown tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Andrew Mitchell collected seven points, four rebounds and three assists, Durant Van Dyke added four points, nine rebounds and three assists and Gatlin Boell returned from injury to finish with five points, five rebounds and three assists.

Grant Landgrebe also had six points and two rebounds. The Mustangs had an 8-2 advantage in made 3-pointers and hit five more free throws.

PCM was 7-of-16 from the free-throw line but out-rebounded Saydel (1-10, 0-7) 40-24.

The Mustangs have won four of their last five games. while the Eagles dropped their 10th in a row.

PCM hosts South Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Monroe.
