New Year’s resolutions at the Newton YMCA

the calendar begins to inch closer to the new year, people often start to make resolutions for Jan. 1. A popular selection to kick of the year is becoming healthier and the Newton YMCA is looking to help.

According to Director of Operations at the Newton YMCA Hannah Bartlett December and January prove to be the time of year when the organization sees an influx of people wanting to become members.

“We always anticipate January being one of our biggest months and it will be ... We’ll definitely see a spike,” Bartlett said. “It is kind of that buzz around Jan. 1.”

While some people stick with their New Year’s resolution and keep coming back after the calendar turns from January, many flame out after a few weeks putting in the work.

“I think a lot of people drop their gym memberships because it’s one of those big things they feel like they either fail at too soon or it’s just too big of a goal they don’t feel like they can continue on with,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett offered a few tips on how to stay motivated to keep hitting the gym. One is creating a routine and a good way to do it is getting plugged in with a YMCA instructor or fellow gym goers to create accountability.

“If you don’t show up they are calling you out on it. Personal training is that as well as group fitness,” Bartlett said.

Throughout the months of December and January, the Newton YMCA offers specials on membership or programs to further sweeten the deal for those wanting to take their health in another direction.

“For January, we have a personal training promotion, where depending on what package you get, you also get sessions free,” Bartlett said. “People want that, people want that set times and accountability.”

While the new year tends to bring new people through the door, new program are offered throughout the year to keep activities fresh for YMCA mbmers.

“We have got so many programs running, so many things starting up for the kids,” Bartlett said.

Along with being a great place to work out, Bartlett said the Newton YMCA is also a community where people come together to motivate each other or just congregate for a cup of coffee.

“It’s not only about how much body fat percentage you can lose but its how to incorporate every aspect of life into creating a holistic approach of well being and wellness,” Bartlett said.
