PCM basketball splits with North Polk

ALLEMAN — Jason Stafford scored a career-high 25 points and Derek Brown added a double-double as Prairie City-Monroe’s boys’ basketball team downed North Polk 47-40 in Heart of Iowa Conference action Thursday night.

Brown finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds to help PCM win its third straight game. Stafford grabbed six rebounds and was 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Durant Van Dyke scored four points and corralled six rebounds, Andrew Mitchell had three rebounds and three assists and Grant Landgrebe pulled down five boards.

The game was tied at 20-all at halftime. The Mustangs (7-5 overall, 4-3 in conference play) outscored the Comets (3-7, 3-4) 10-2 in the third to create some separation.

PCM connected on 17-of-25 from the foul line.

The Mustangs host Saydel in a varsity doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Monroe.

Pella 78, PCM 58

MONROE — A slow start was too much to overcome for PCM’s boys against Pella on Monday night.

The Class 3A No. 5 Dutch led 24-15 after one quarter and never trailed again during a 78-58 non-conference road win.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to weather.

Pella (9-2) won its seventh straight game. Treyton Sturgeon had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the visitors.

Stafford scored 14 points and dished out four assists in the loss, while Brown had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Van Dyke added nine points, three rebounds and three assists.

Landgrebe tallied eight points and three boards, Robbie Ferneding grabbed six rebounds and Brayden Berger corralled three rebounds.

GIRLS

North Polk 84, PCM 25

Regan Freland and Lilli Baird scored 20 of the Mustangs’ 25 points, but 3A No. 7 North Polk defeated PCM’s girls’ basketball team 84-25 during HOIC action on Thursday night.

Maggie Phipps returned to the Comets’ lineup after missing the past two games and scored 20 points. North Polk (8-4, 7-0) led 46-7 at halftime.

Freland had 11 points, three rebounds and three steals to lead PCM (4-8, 2-5).

Baird tallied nine points and three steals, Emma George grabbed four rebounds, Kate McCarthy pulled down three boards and Lexi Kuecker scored two points and dished out two assists. Riley Hjortshoj had two points and two rebounds.

Pella 69, PCM 33

MONROE — PCM’s girls continued to struggle at the offensive end of the floor during a 69-33 non-conference home loss to Pella on Monday night.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to weather.

Pella (7-5) led the Mustangs 9-4 after one quarter and went up 28-16 at halftime. The Lady Dutch outscored PCM 41-17 in the second half.

“We have been struggling to consistently get multiple trips that end in points,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said. “Defensively, we are struggling to keep teams from driving to the basket. We are putting teams on the line too much lately, too.”

Freland finished with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and one block to lead the Mustangs, who dropped their fifth in a row.

Celeste Wagaman scored six points, George tallied four points, three rebounds and three steals and Hjortshoj grabbed three rebounds.
