Baxter sweeps GMG on hardwood

GARWIN — Baxter’s girls’ basketball team held GMG to single digits in all four quarters during a 51-21 road win on Thursday night during Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

Baxter led 11-5 after one quarter but outscored GMG 15-5 in the second and 13-2 in the fourth to cruise to the win.

Caitlyn Bruntz had 16 points and nine steals to lead Baxter (8-5 overall, 3-2 in conference play).

McKenzie Eslinger put in 10 points and grabbed three rebounds and Sophie Meyer had nine points, three rebounds and three assists and Holly Jessen dished out four assists and collected five steals.

Lilie Vansice tallied six points and three steals, Merrin Ziesman had four points, three rebounds and three assists, Sadie Meyer handed out three assists and Brooke Bacon swiped three steals and corralled three boards.

GMG fell to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in conference games.

The Bolts host North Tama for a girl-boy varsity doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Baxter.

BOYS

Baxter 72, GMG 55

Cole Damman scored 25 points, Carter Nelsen had a double-double and Baxter’s boys’ basketball team won its sixth straight game, downing GMG 72-55 during an Iowa Star Conference South Division game.

Baxter (9-2, 4-1) led by 18 points at halftime and coasted to another victory.

Damman scored 25 points on 9-of-22 shooting. He also had six steals and five assists. Nelsen finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Rory Heer tallied 13 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Cody Damman put in eight points and dished out three assists and Kael Johnston had five points, four rebounds and three assists.

GMG (3-9, 1-4) got 20 points from Avery Bryant and 16 from Justin Savadty.
