Phillip “Phil” Oswalt of Newton, died on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2020, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, A visitation will begin an hour prior to the service. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Newton Elks or a charity of your choosing.

Phillip Paul Oswalt, 88, the son of Harve and Lola (Koopman) Oswalt, was born Aug. 23, 1931, in Wichita, Kan. He was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1950. Phil had served his country with the U.S. Airforce, during the Korean Conflict.

In 1973, Phil was united in marriage with JoAnn Barton in Newton. He was a supervisor at Maytag in Newton and Admiral appliances in Galesburg, Ill., retiring from Winpower in Newton, as a plant manager.

Phil loved being with family, was a member of the Elks Club, as a Life Member, enjoyed Frank Sinatra, the Iowa Hawkeyes, he loved his Chicago Cubs and was always the life of the party. He had a passion for the games of golf and baseball, coaching little league baseball.

Phil devoted his life to his wife, children and family and is survived by his wife of 46 plus years, JoAnn Oswalt of Newton; his daughters, Stephanie (Bill) Conklin, Tonya (Marty) Smith and Donna (David) Plumb, all of Newton; his son, Steve (Julie) Oswalt of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Brooke (Kyle) Swihart, Carter Smith, Brittnee (Matthew) Haynie, Cole Smith, Nicole (Mark) Patience, Christoper Conklin, Andrea (Josh) Matson, Heather (Jess) King, Lori Thompson, Tommy (Angie) Oswalt, Amber (Brian) Bird and Sarah Jorges; great-grandchildren, Layne, Willow, Harry, Dillon, Rylee, Serenity, Natalie, Olivia, Nicholas, Matthew, Abigail, Evalyn, Declan, Aiden, Logan, Rossi, Oliver and Luna; great-great-grandchild, Asher; his twin sister, Phyllis Dito; sister-in-law, Joy Oswalt; his many nieces, nephews and friends.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Owen and Glen Oswalt.
