Smith leads Baxter wrestling at North Tama tournament

TRAER — Five Baxter wrestlers traveled to the North Tama tournament on Jan. 4 and placed fifth as a team.

Freshmen Curtis Gliem and Cole Smith and junior Micah Kearns led the Bolts with top-three finishes.

Baxter scored 37 points to finish ahead of Collins-Maxwell (22) and Tripoli (21).

Host North Tama won the tournament with 90.5 points. Riceville (85), North Cedar (60) and WACO (54) rounded out the top four.

Smith finished second at 120 pounds. He was 1-1 on the day with a win by fall and a loss by fall.

Kearns was third at 285. He was 2-2 on the day with two wins by fall and two losses by fall.

Freshman Curtis Gliem also finished third at 113. Gliem was 1-2 on the day . He won 19-18 in TB-1 for his only win and lost a pair of bouts 15-2 and 15-0.

Junior Brad Matthews and freshman Jackson Bottorff were both fourth at their weights.

Matthews won his first match by fall but finished 1-3 on the day at 152. Bottorff was 0-3 at 195.

The Bolts wrestle next at 6 p.m. in Belle Plaine.
