Drake women bury 15 treys in win over Cyclones

DES MOINES — A big second quarter propelled the Drake women’s basketball team past Iowa State on Sunday.

The Bulldogs buried 15 3-pointers and outscored the Cyclones by nine in the second quarter during an 86-81 victory in front of 4,647 fans at the Knapp Center.

Sara Rhine had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, while six other players scored at least six points.

Ashley Joens led Iowa State with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Iowa State (1-1) led 23-19 after one quarter, but Drake (2-0) outscored the Cyclones 20-11 in the second to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Both teams scored 47 points in the second half.

Iowa State led by as many as eight in the first quarter.

Rhine’s 3-pointer with 56 seconds left in the period trimmed the Cyclones’ advantage to four. The Bulldogs turned a 26-20 deficit into a 39-34 lead at halftime.

Becca Hittner had seven of her 13 points in the second quarter. She also finished with eight rebounds and three assists in the win.

Drake buried 5-of-10 from long range in the third quarter to push the lead to 17 points at one point.

Iowa State got back in the game at the free-throw line. The Cyclones made 13-of-16 from the line in the game and got within one point two different times in the fourth quarter.

Kierra Collier hit a trey to put Drake back up by four and Hannah Fuller added another 3-pointer a little bit later to extend the advantage.

Rhine’s layup with 2:27 left came just before her dagger 3-pointer put Drake up 83-75 with 1:06 to play.

Iowa State hit two 3-pointers in the final minute but Hittner made a layup to keep the Bulldogs in front.

Maddie Monahan had 13 points and three assists for Drake, while Collier added 11 points and six assists. Brenni Rose chipped in eight points and five assists. Drake was 15-of-34 from 3-point range.

Kristin Scott scored a team-high 22 points and had four rebounds and Rae Johnson had 10 points and six assists for Iowa State.

Madison Wise, Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw and Ines Nezerwa all had nine points.

The Cyclones were 8-of-25 from long range.
