NCMP decks Boone on Senior Night

NCMP’s Aquagirls have a very competitive rivalry with the Boone Toreadors. Boone came to Newton’s YMCA Tuesday for NCMP’s final home swim meet of the season.

The Aquagirls were not going to be denied on Senior Night. Winning nine of the 11 events in the varsity division, NCMP beat Boone 102-68.

NCMP’s junior varsity made it sweep, winning 82-68.

“It’s all about the work we’ve done in the pool, not just the training to swim but also training to be a family,” senior Molly Coy said about the win.

Coy and the other seven NCMP seniors and their parents were recognized at a break in the action. Those seniors were Lilly Busch, Abbie Hill, Allison Paulius, Jordon Pritchard, Emma Thomas, Kenzie VanManen and Erika Van Sickle.

"To win Senior night feels unreal because it just can't be the last home meet for me," Coy said. "I'm glad ot have this team behind me and an incredible feeling to experience that with my team."

The Aquagirls began the night with a big win in the 200-meter medley relay race. The foursome of Maylei Ruggles, VanMaanen, Hannah Nedder and Maggie Garrett won in 2 minutes, 8.65 seconds.

Taking fourth in the 200 medley relay race was the foursome of Arabella Eide, Paulius, Chloe Kibbee and Thomas in 2:22.50. NCMP would win all three varsity relay races.

Nedder, Ruggles, Lauren Zaabel and Lillie Ray won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.15. The NCMP team Thomas, VanMaanen, Van Sickle and Maggie Garrett was third in 2:02.23.

The team of Zaabel, Van Sickle, Grace Benson and Ray posted a time of 4:22.82 to win the 400 freestyle to end the meet. Combining for a fourth-place time of 4:49.38 were Natalie Boll, Thomas, Eide and Courtney Dawson.

“Boone is always a competitive team. They are ahead of us in the Team Power Rankings so this is a great win for us,” NCMP head coach Sarah Patterson said. “We had so many great swims tonight and the excitement of being Senior Night and the final home meet was tremendous.”

VanMaanen won the 200 individual medley in 2:45.83 with Paulius in third at 2:51.95 and Eide was sixth in 3:00.84. VanMaanen and Paulius went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.23 and 1:22.39. Garrett placed fourth in 1:29.22.

“The energy was really high knowing Boone is one of our biggest rivals. We really pulled through together tonight,” VanMaanen said.

Ray led a 1-2-3 finish for the Aquagirls in the 200 freestyle. She won in 2:19.71 followed by Zaabel in 2:25.35 and Van Sickle in 2:25.84.

Ray also won the 100 freestyle race in 1:02.25 with Van Sickle in second at 1:05.31. Zaabel was fourth in 1:06.12.

"What I really liked to night is how we battled hard on all the finishes," Patterson said. "We touched them out more than they touched us out. The girls got excited to swim at home tonight and that's when meets are fun."

Nedder, who is ranked 17th in the 100 butterfly, won that race going away, 1:08.04. The most intense race of the night was the 50 freestyle when Nedder out-touched Boone’s Liz Purtle — 28.51 to 28.75 seconds.

Also in the butterfly race, Ruggles was third in 1:19.69 and Kibbee placed fourth in 1:20.35. Ruggles and Garrett were third and fourth in the 50 freestyle in 29.95 and 29.97, respectively.

Boone went 1-2 in the 400 freestyle race. The Toreadors were 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke.

Boll was NCMP's top finisher in the 400 in third place at 5:23.81 and Benson took fourth in 5:31.27. Dawson placed sixth in 5:43.80.

In the backstroke race, Eide finished fourth in 1:25.28 and Emily Vander Mole was fifth in 1:26.16 and Kibbee was sixth in 1:28.11.

"Tonight was bittersweet because I've been on this team for two years and now it's almost over," VanMaanen said. "This was a great way to end swimming here at home."

NCMP’s junior varsity got wins in the 200 medley relay, the 100 and 400 freestyle races — going 1-2-3 in those individual events. Hill won the 400 and Emily Mills was the winner of the 100 with Coy in second.

"We saw a lot of the little things we've been working on come into play tonight and that's rewarding as a coach," Patterson said. "They were having fun tonight. It was a good confidence win as we head into our two conference meets on Saturday and next Tuesday then we'll drop down to the district team."

VanMaanen said going into the conference meets knowing it's the junior varsity's last meet, the swimmers are working on their finishes. Also going strong throughout the entire race, she said.

NCMP travels to Boone on Saturday for the North Central Swim Conference meet. Diving begins at 10 a.m. and swim events are at 1 p.m.
