Bats: Up close and personal

Would you like to learn more about the bats that can be found on the refuge in the summer? Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge invites you to a special evening of bat mist-netting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with button making and bat crafts for children and a presentation at 7 p.m. The event will last until mist-netting is complete, but attendees may leave at any time. This free event is open to the public.

During the mist-netting, bat expert Dr. Russ Benedict of Central College, will teach participants about native bats, demonstrate the use of a mist-net and allow everyone to get up-close looks at any bats that are captured. Information will be recorded on the species, age and sex of the bats to help better understand bat populations on the refuge.

The group will meet at the Visitor Center, then travel to the netting site on a gravel road several miles from the Visitor Center. It is recommended those participating wear comfortable walking shoes, long pants and bug spray and bring a flashlight and a chair or blanket for sitting.
