Tigerhawks sweep Iowa Valley

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo’s baseball team held off a late charge from Iowa Valley on Wednesday during South Iowa Cedar League action.

The Tigerhawks won the game 5-4, and Trystin Ross’ triple play helped Zarek Hill get out of a two-on, nobody out jam in the sixth inning.

Iowa Valley also had runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh, but a fly ball was caught by Colton Lind to end it.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first. Colfax-Mingo (6-5 overall, 6-4 in SICL play) took the lead for good in the third and then added two more runs in the sixth to go up 5-2. Iowa Valley (3-9, 3-7) scored two runs in the seventh, but Hill closed the door for the win.

The Tigerhawks only had five hits at the plate but drew eight walks. Hunter Green, Ross and Hill all had one hit, one walk and one run, Wyatt Gull collected a walk and a hit, Brady Berkey had a hit and Zach Steenhoek, Cole Bracewell, Nate Jones and Jake Nichols all walked once.

Bracewell scored two runs and had an RBI groundout. Lind had the other RBI.

Berkey started on the mound and allowed two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and no walks in 2 2/3 innings. Hill got the win after allowing two runs — one earned — on seven hits with five strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter in 4 1/3 innings.

The two teams combined for five errors.

The Tigerhawks host Belle Plaine at 6 p.m. on Friday in Colfax.

SOFTBALL

Colfax-Mingo 19,

Iowa Valley 1, 3 innings

MARENGO — Colfax-Mingo’s softball team bounced back from its third loss of the season with an easy 19-1 road victory over Iowa Valley on Wednesday.

The Tigerhawks scored 18 runs in the first inning, and Colbee Cunningham did the rest in the circle.

Cunningham earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk in three innings.

Colfax-Mingo improved to 12-3 overall and 9-1 in the SICL. Iowa Valley fell to 2-11 and 2-6.

The middle of the Tigerhawk lineup produced nine of the team’s 14 hits. Rilee Slycord was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Cunningham was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk, Braedynn Rawlins was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Chelsea Russell finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run.

Delaney Underwood batted in the lead-off spot for the first time this season and finished with one hit, two walks and three runs.

Carley Underwood, Holland Robinette, Mariah Webster and Caylee Cunningham all had one hit.

Carley Underwood and Webster each scored two runs, walked once and had an RBI. Caylee Cunningham had one run and three RBIs. Kylie Doty scored three runs and Joslyn Chadwick also scored a run.

Colfax-Mingo plays Belle Plaine at 6 p.m. on Friday in Belle Plaine.
