SIGOURNEY — Lynnville-Sully’s track teams knew they had athletes qualified for the state track meet in six events when they left Friday’s Class 1A state qualifying meet.

The Hawks had six event champions at the state qualifier hosted by Sigourney. Those were automatically qualified for this week’s Class 1A competition at the 2019 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships.

Freshman Reagan McFarland ran a personal-best time of 13.63 seconds to win the girls’ 100-meter dash.

Senior Tyson Vander Linden posted his season’s-best time of 50.71 seconds to claim the boys’ 400 title. He defended his 1A district title in the 400 hurdles in 55.58 seconds.

Senior Gage Vander Leest won the 110 high hurdles in 15.36. He combined with Vander Linden and juniors Ethan Wyma and Kinnick McFarland to capture the championship in the 800 sprint medley relay in a season’s-best 1 minute, 36.08 seconds.

Rylan James, a senior, used a personal-best throw of 50 feet, 10 1/2 inches to win the shot put.

James was second in the discus, 136-8. Vander Linden got edged in the 100 by .02 seconds, taking runner-up in 11.30.

Both had to wait to see if the would qualify for the 1A state meet in at-large slots for those events. Those were announced on Saturday.

Also waiting until Saturday was the Hawk girls’ 4x100 relay team. The team of McFarland, juniors Kaleah Ehresman and Mallory Loftus and sophomore Korinne Jansen placed second on Friday in a season’s-best time of 53.65 seconds.

James, Vander Linden and the girls’ 4x100 relay were awarded at-large slots. As was sophomore Caitlin Alberts, who ran fourth in a personal-best time of 1:05.11, in the girls’ 400 on Friday.

Vander Linden is the Class 1A defending champion in the 400 hurdles. He goes into the state meet with the fastest time.

He also has the second-fastest time in the 1A boys’ 400. His time in the 100 is fifth-fastest among qualifiers.

Vander Leest is looking for another state medal in the 110 high hurdles. He has the fifth-fastest time going into the state meet.

Lynnville-Sully is out to defend its 1A state sprint medley relay championship. Vander Linden anchored on the 2018 team but has three new relay mates going into this year’s meet with the seventh-fastest time.

James has been in the state shot put ring before but not the discus event. His shot put throw stands at No. 3 among qualifiers and his discus throw has him in 14th.

McFarland has the 24th fastest time for the girls’ 100 and Alberts’ time in the 400 is ranked No. 23. The 4x100 relay’s time is 22nd.

The 1A state competition begins at 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The state track meet is at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

There will be running event finals slated for Saturday for all classes starting at 9 a.m.

The Lynnville-Sully boys finished second with 86 points to Pekin’s 112 points at Friday’s state qualifying meet. The Hawk girls were seventh with 51 points. Pekin took the girls’ team title with 126.5 points.
