C-M fourth, Baxter fifth at Lady Bolts Relays

BAXTER — Both Colfax-Mingo and Baxter each claimed one win and two runner-up finishes at the annual Lady Bolts Relays on April 18.

On a cold and windy night, Baxter’s Lauren Ratliff won the 1,500-meter run on her Senior Night and Colfax-Mingo’s distance medley relay team also collected a gold medal.

The Tigerhawks and Bolts finished in the middle of the standings as Colfax-Mingo took fourth with 64.5 points and Baxter finished fifth with 49 points.

West Marshall (134.75) edged Collins-Maxwell (133.75) by a single point in the final standings and Madrid (109) was third in the eight-team field.

Colfax-Mingo’s distance medley relay team included Jordan Atwood, Colbee Cunningham, Riley Carroll and Abbey McConeghey and their winning time was 4 minutes, 57.97 seconds.

The Tigerhawks’ two runner-up finishes came from Jordan Atwood win the long jump (14 feet, 3 3/4 inches) and Braedynn Rawlins in the shot put (35-4 1/2).

Baxter’s Ratliff won the 1,500 (5 minutes, 37.27 seconds) and was second in the 3,000 (12:02.93). The Bolts’ other runner-up finish came from Amber Weltha in the discus (103-3). Brenna Thomson also finished third in the 3,000 (12:18.81).

For Colfax-Mingo, the 4x400 relay team of Ilia Hostetter, Atwood, Cunningham and Carroll finished third in 4:49.76. Carroll also was third in the 400 hurdles (1:20.06).

Lewis Lundy Relays

MONTEZUMA — Baxter excelled in distance races and field events on April 16 at the annual Lewis Lundy Relays hosted by Montezuma.

Logan Berg, Ian Thomson and Josh Bruntz gave the Bolts double points in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and the Baxter boys scored 155 points in third place.

On the girls’ side, Ratliff and Brenna Thomson went 2-3 in the 1,500 and 3,000 and Weltha and Kaylin Van Ryswyk both scored double points in the shot put and discus, helping the Bolt girls to a fifth-place finish.

Baxter’s boys were third in the team standings but finished only three points behind team champion GMG (158) and two points back of runner-up North Tama (157).

Baxter’s girls scored 102 points in fifth. Lynnville-Sully won the meet with 142.5 points, while Montezuma (140), North Mahaska (123) and North Tama (108.5) were next.

Berg scored a team-high 28 points on the night. He won the 800 (2:11.04) and 3,200 (10:30.76) and was second in the 1,600 (5:12.53).

Thomson won the 1,600 (5:12.26) and took third in the 3,200 (11:21.88). Bruntz was second in the 800 (2:12.57).

The other win for the Bolts came from Will Clapper in the discus. He won the event with a throw of 145-0.

Ben Huff also was second in the high jump (5-4) and Dalton Heer took third in the long jump (18-4 3/4).

Braeden Kelly was the runner-up in the 200 (24.6) and Rory Heer was third in the 400 (54.86). Rory Heer also was fourth in the 100 (12.11), Dalton Heer was fourth in the 200 (24.86) and Andrew Esqueda finished fourth in the 400 (57.86) and fifth in the long jump (17-11 1/2).

Baxter’s 4x400 and distance medley relays were second. The 4x400 relay team of Bruntz, Cole Damman, Huff and Rory Heer finished in 4:01.07. The distance medley relay team of Damman, Huff, Dalton Heer and Bruntz hit the finish line in 4:13.97.

The sprint medley relay team finished third in 1:46.64. That foursome included Damman, Dalton Heer, Rory Heer and Bruntz.

Baxter’s girls got two wins. Rachel Kenney tied for first in the 100 (13.65) and Weltha took first in the shot put (32-6 1/2). Van Ryswyk finished second (101-9) and Weltha was third (101-0) in the discus.

Ratliff was second in the 1,500 (5:41.74) and 3,000 (12:01.77) and Brenna Thomson took third in the 1,500 (5:48.15) and 3,000 (12:08.97). Maddie Pierce finished third in the 100 hurdles (19.8).

Kailee Conradi ended up fifth in the 800 (2:56.03) and Van Ryswyk finished fourth in the shot put (29-7 1/4).

The Bolts were second in the 4x100 relay. The team of Pierce, Conradi, Andrea Brown and Kenney finished in 56.69 seconds.

C-M’s Hill leads Tigerhawk boys to fifth at Van Meter

VAN METER — Senior Zarek Hill ran the 400 hurdles for the first time in 51 weeks on April 15. And his first-place finish in the event led Colfax-Mingo’s boys to fifth out of 12 teams at Bill Miller Invitational at Van Meter High School.

Hill, who scored 20.5 points on the night, won the 400 hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.17 seconds, which ranks eighth in Class 2A and fourth all-time at the school.

He also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 19-5 1/2.

Des Moines Christian won the team title with 151 points. Woodward Academy (133.5) was second followed by host Van Meter (109) in third. Panorama (77) was 23 points in front of Colfax-Mingo (54) in fourth.

Brady Berkey scored 12.25 points on the night, including fifth-place finishes in the 400 (57.05) and the long jump (18-8 1/2).

The 4x400 relay team of Berkey, Trinity Schroeder, A.J. Gibson and Hill finished fourth in 3:44.45 and the 4x800 relay team of Hernandez, Hunter Green, Schroeder and Hill was fourth in 9:21.18.

Clapper, relays lead Baxter boys at South Hamilton

JEWELL — Clapper scored 20 of Bolts’ 52 points as Baxter’s boys were sixth at the South Hamilton Hawk Relays on April 18.

Clapper won the shot put (51-4) and discus (130-7), while Ian Thomson was third in the 3,200-meter run (10:57.90).

Des Moines Christian and North Polk both scored 128 points at the top of the team standings.

The Bolts’ relays highlighted the rest of the evening. The distance medley relay was second, while the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays all were third.

The distance medley relay team included Rory Heer, Huff, Bruntz and Berg, and they finished in 4:01.50.

The 4x200 team of Damman, Dalton Heer, Huff and Rory Heer took third in 1:40.90 and the 4x400 relay foursome of Bruntz, Huff, Berg and Rory Heer were third in 3:52.30.

In the 4x800, Damman, Rory Heer, Bruntz and Berg finished third in 9:05.30.

C-M boys finish seventh at Martensdale-St. Marys

MARTENSDALE — Hill claimed the only win, and Colfax-Mingo’s boys collected five top-five finishes at the Martensdale-St. Marys Boys Invitational on April 18.

Hill won the 400 hurdles (57.31 seconds) and scored 17.5 of the team’s 34.5 points as the Tigerhawks were seventh in the 11-team field.

Madrid won the team title with 186.5 points.

C-M’s sprint medley relay team finished third. The foursome of Koenig, Gibson, Hill and Schroeder hit the finish line in 1:44.83.

Hill was fourth in the long jump (18-10 1/4), Schroeder finished fifth in the 400 (56.82) and Gibson ended up tied for fifth in the high jump (5-2).

The 4x400 relay team of Schroeder, Gibson, Holister Koenig and Hill crossed the finish line in fifth with a time of 3:46.87.
