Newton girls compete in ISU indoor track meet

AMES — Newton High seniors Rachel Rhoads and Abbie Barr turned in the top individual performances at Monday’s 26th annual Iowa State High School Classic indoor meet.

Rhoads posted a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. She ran the track at ISU’s Lied Recreation Athletic Facility in 5 minutes, 05.74 seconds.

Barr cleared the high jump bar at 4 feet, 8 inches. She placed 14th.

Barr combined with sophomores Kate Callaghan and Teddie Brunsmann and freshman Brooklyn Cupples in running in the 4x100 relay race. It was the final race of the meet and the Newton foursome had a time of 55.38 seconds for 28th.

Sophomore Ashay Malow also ran the 1,500, placing 30th in 5:36.83. Juniors Molly Coy and Madelyn Pickett ran in the 800 meters, finishing 69th in 3:03.08 and 96th in 3:29.48, respectively.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Callaghan finished 39th in 10.71 seconds and freshman Emma Rogers was 88th in 11.90 seconds.

Sophomore Sydni Followill posted a 9.75-second time in the 60-meter dash for 121st. Taking 126th was freshman Briahna Smith in 9.87 seconds.

Newton’s 4x800 relay team of senior Clare Muckler, freshman Grace Benson, sophomore Willow Oswalt and freshman Morgan Stalzer was 31st in 11:45.56.

Muckler, Benson, Oswalt and freshman Kelsey Church took 53rd in the 4x400 relay in 5:06.70. Church combined with freshman Nya Davis, sophomore Savanna Spencer and junior Priscila Amador for 65th in the 800 sprint medley relay in 2:19.46.

In the long jump, Cupples went 13-9 for 48th and Amador was 71st with a leap of 12-2.50. Freshman Kealey Manning placed 37th in the shot put with a throw of 30-11.25.

Newton finishes its indoor track season on Thursday. The Cardinals compete in the Colfax-Mingo Coed Invitational at Grinnell College. Events begin at 4:30 p.m.
