Cardinals fall to ADM Tigers

ADEL — Scoring and shooting above their averages, Newton High’s Cardinal boys had the offense going Thursday night. Defense not so much.

The Cardinals remained winless following a 78-58 non-conference loss to host ADM.

“It all starts with competing on the defensive end of floor,” Newton head coach Kyle Peta said. “We aren’t doing a good enough job on that end of the court.”

Newton shot 40 percent, 23-of-55, from the field. The Cardinals average 38 percent and they have averaged 50.8 points a game.

The ADM Tigers pushed out to a 15-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and were up 35-20 at halftime. The second half was a scoring fest.

Newton poured in 24 points in the third quarter, but gave up 23 to the Tigers. ADM outscored Newton 20-14 in the fourth period.

Freshman Noah Allen netted four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points for Newton. Freshman Adam Mattes added 10 points.

The Tigers held a 29-26 rebounding edge. junior Quintrail Coley had six rebounds and four points. Junior Kaleb Dydell had two points and five rebounds

Sophomore Logan Schilling had eight points. Senior McKenna Davis had five points followed by junior Kyle Long with four and junior Cody Satterfield with three. Satterfield also had two assists.

ADM got 17 points from Nate Mueller, 15 from Nathan Conrad and 10 from Jaxson Millsap.

“We have to battle harder on the defensive end. Our help side needs to react quicker,” Peta said. “We gave up way too many second-chance points — we have to be more physical.”

Newton (0-18) concludes regular-season play Friday at Grinnell. Newton plays Grinnell at Grinnell College. The junior varsity game tips at 6:45 p.m. followed by the varsity.
