Joel O’Dell, left, and Allison Detmer, right, recently completed the Newton Public Library’s 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Children receive a sticker for every 100 books, a book to keep at 500 and a book bag full of items to help them get ready for kindergarten when they reach the 1,000 mark.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an ongoing program at the Newton Public Library designed to encourage daily reading with children. Parents may sign up children from newborn through age 5. Participants receive a book log to keep track of books read, or can use the 1,000 Books app to track reading.
