CARLISLE — Ten wrestlers from PCM’s top-ranked wrestling team advanced to the district tournament.
But all 14 wrestlers in the lineup for sectionals will have the chance to compete at least one more time this season.
PCM advanced 10 into districts, which led the Mustangs to a second-place finish at the Class 2A Sectional 11 tournament on Feb. 2. The top-two finish qualified PCM for a 2A regional dual for the second straight season.
Second-ranked Wes Cummings (160) and Colby Tool (145), fourth-ranked Lucas Roland (182), sixth-ranked Payton Drake (120) and Jarron Trausch (170) and Jace Smith (285) all won sectional titles at Carlisle High School to advance.
Four other Mustangs advanced as runner-ups, including fifth-ranked Landon Fenton (113), Brian Nicholson (126), Cody Wallace (152) and Seth Greiner (220).
Clay Van Wyk was 2-1 at 132 and finished third. Cooper Sloan was 1-1 at 195 but finished fifth. Trey Thomas and Chance Palm both lost their only match of the day and finished fifth.
The top two finishers in each weight class at each sectional advance to the district round, which for PCM will be at noon Saturday in Knoxville.
The Mustangs, ranked 12th in the final IWOCA dual rankings, competed in a 2A regional dual tournament on Feb. 5 in Atlantic. PCM faced No. 22 Harlan in the first round. The winner of that dual met the winner of No. 13 Humboldt and No. 14 Carlisle in the regional dual finals.
The winner of each regional dual advances to state duals on Feb. 13 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Carlisle edged PCM at sectionals, winning with 262 points. PCM, which was the runner-up at sectionals last season, scored 250.5 points in second. Both teams advanced 10 wrestlers to districts, but PCM was 5-3 in head-to-head matches against Carlisle.
Bondurant-Farrar placed third with 191 points, followed by Clarke (129), Knoxville (118) and Chariton (86).
Cummings (34-2) and Smith (26-14) won both of their matches by fall. Cummings spent a total of 84 seconds on the mat.
Drake (29-6) was 2-0 with a win by pin and a win by injury time. Trausch (34-4) was 2-0 with a win by pin and a win by 8-3 decision.
Roland (19-3) was 2-0 with a win by pin and a win by technical fall. The 20-3 technical fall came against No. 10 Ethan Reed of Carlisle.
Tool (37-1) was 2-0 on the day. He won his first match by pin in 39 seconds. He needed overtime to dispatch of Carlisle’s Darek Tingle. Tool won his 35th straight match with a 2-1 win in the finals.
Fenton (17-3) was 1-1 in his 113-pound bracket. He finished second by rule to No. 2 Colby Lillegard of Bondurant-Farrar. Fenton led Lillegard late in the match but a four-point move helped Lillegard win 8-6.
Nicholson (11-5) and Greiner (20-17) both took second by rule in their weight classes.
Nicholson was 2-1 on the day with two pins. He lost by fall to No. 6 Carter Logue of Carlisle in the finals. Greiner was 1-1 with one pin. He lost 3-1 in the finals.
Wallace (32-8) had to win a wrestleback to advance. He won his first match by fall then lost 6-3 in the finals. He won his wrestleback by pin.
