Rhone’s 25 points rallies C-M girls past Melcher-Dallas

MELCHER-DALLAS — Senior Payton Rhone was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line in the first half to keep Colfax-Mingo’s girls’ basketball team close with Melcher-Dallas at halftime.

It was Rhone’s outside shooting that pushed the Tigerhawks over the hump in the second half, and her 25 points sent Colfax-Mingo to a narrow 54-53 non-conference win on Thursday night.

Rhone had 13 points in the first half but the Tigerhawks trailed 26-22 at halftime. She made three of her four 3-pointers in the second half to help C-M rally for the win.

Senior Jordan Atwood also scored eight of her 10 points in the second half as the Tigerhawks won the second 16 minutes 32-27.

The win snapped a 10-game losing skid for Colfax-Mingo (3-15). Melcher-Dallas (2-16) lost its third straight game.

Rhone finished 11-of-12 from the free-throw line, and Colfax-Mingo was 15-of-24 overall.

Sophomore Brennan Rhone scored seven points, and senior Colbee Cunningham and freshman Avery Rague both chipped in five points.

Kinser Reed and Emilie Krpan each scored 18 points for Melcher-Dallas.

Colfax-Mingo plays Baxter in a non-conference varsity doubleheader starting with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. on Monday in Baxter. The boys’ game tips off around 7:30 p.m.

Senior Zarek Hill scored a career-high 22 points, but Colfax-Mingo’s boys’ basketball team dropped its fourth straight game with a 79-65 loss to Melcher-Dallas on Thursday.

Melcher-Dallas (9-6) led 38-33 at halftime and outscored the Tigerhawks 41-32 in the second half.

Hill hit four treys, and Colfax-Mingo (4-15) buried 11 in the loss. Junior Brady Berkey, sophomore Zach Steenhoek and freshman Cole Bracewell all connected on two 3-pointers.

Berkey scored 16 points in the game, and sophomore David Rague added eight. Steenhoek and Bracewell each scored six points, and sophomore Jake Nichols put in five points.

Blaise Cooper came into the game averaging 11 points per game but led all scorers with 25 points. Ethan Harrington averaged 14.7 points per game coming in but scored 23.
