• Melissa J. Barnell, 34, of Grinnell, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 12:14 p.m. Jan. 19. According to Newton police, officers were sent to Walmart for a shoplifter. The store’s loss prevention employees told officers they witnessed Marnell allegedly putting unpaid items in her purse, totaling $77.55. Barnell received a citation, summoning her to appear in court.
