Ranked Montezuma sweeps Tigerhawks

MONTEZUMA — Montezuma’s ranked basketball teams were too much for Colfax-Mingo on Jan. 21 during South Iowa Cedar League action.

The Class 1A second-ranked Braves started fast in the boys’ game and defeated the Tigerhawks 73-45. In the girls’ game. The 1A No. 3 Bravettes pushed Colfax-Mingo’s losing streak to eight games during a 72-31 win.

The Montezuma boys led 18-4 after one quarter and never looked back. The lead was 17 at halftime, and the Tigerhawks got as close as 13.

Senior Zarek Hill and junior Brady Berkey both had 11 points for the Tigerhawks (4-12 overall, 4-9 in SICL play). Sophomores Jacob Nichols and David Rague scored seven points and five points, respectively.

Leading the way for the Braves (15-0, 13-0) was sophomore Trey Shearer, who finished with 25 points, five rebounds and five assists.

In the girls’ game, Montezuma led 22-9 after one quarter and outscored the Tigerhawks (2-13, 2-11) 21-8 in the third. Senior Riley Gatton had 19 points for Montezuma (15-1, 12-0).

C-M seniors Payton Rhone and Jordan Atwood each scored 11 to lead the Tigerhawks.

Montezuma has won 14 straight games.
