It snowed!

For the first time in several years, we have several inches of snow on the ground and it didn’t melt away the next day. While I might not be the most excited person about winter weather, I have two little girls that are bursting at the seams to get outside from the moment they wake up.

With a dusting Friday night, Saturday morning brought a thick coat of snow to the area. My youngest, who is typically the first one out of bed, immediately asked to put on her snow pants and boots and head outside. Because it was still the morning and I wasn’t quite ready to venture out, we ate some breakfast first.

After putting off the inevitable as long as possible, we put on our warm duds and were in the snow. My youngest actually went out first, unable to wait any longer, and played in the snow while her dad plowed the driveway. She couldn’t have been happier as she tried to throw snowballs at him, made snow angels all over the yard and just tromped through the snow.

Once her sister joined in on the fun, we spent the rest of the morning sledding, have a snowball fight and creating our very own snowman. Although the snow wasn’t quite the right consistency for rolling, we packed and packed until we had three circular looking lumps of snow, cascading in size, in the middle of the yard. To finish off the snowman’s look, the girls added a hat, scarf, two twig arms, a carrot nose, buttons, eyes made from rocks and a smile.

After our first go in the snow, we headed inside to warm up and dry off for lunch. My day in the snow was over but the girls went a second round later in the afternoon, giggling the entire time as they really got to play in the snow for the first time in years.

The next day, we headed to by parents house to go sledding with my brother’s family. Since we grew up next to the golf course, we had an ample amount of hills available to us and spent hours sliding down and climbing back up until we were exhausted or it got too dark outside. It is awesome to be able to share those memories with our kids and make new ones of our own.

We started on the small hills by the house before decided to trek across the golf course to the best hill on the tee box of whole number two. I’m sure the hill on hole number three would be awesome, too, but it is way too far away at the other end of the golf course.

Once we all made it there, my little ones were dragging behind quite a bit because of the walk, the fun started. We made a few paths, that were destroyed not long after, and the girls started sledding down the hill over and over and over.

My brother and sister decided to get a path going on the really big hill, through the tall grass, with the inter tube sled. Pretty soon every sled, including my niece’s snowboard, was heading down the big hill, the next one going further than the last.

When it was my youngest’s turn to go down by herself, she ended spinning around, which lead to tears, especially when she crashed at the end. Since she isn’t a big fan of thrill rides, a fact we learned after going on a mini roller coaster on summer vacation, I wasn’t overly surprised by the result. She also wasn’t thrilled with continually having to walk up the hill.

My oldest loved it all. She went down time after time, carried her sled back with her up the hill and smiled the whole time. Even a crash which involved her going end over end didn’t dampen her spirits, although she did need a second to regroup.

It was a really fun afternoon spent with family making memories. With the forecast predicting several more inches this weekend, I think we’ll be out in the snow even more.
