MAXWELL — The wrestling programs at Baxter and Collins-Maxwell don’t have the numbers to compete in a lot of duals they take part in.
That gave Colfax-Mingo a chance to get some younger wrestlers onto the mat on Tuesday night. And the Tigerhawks came away with two blowout wins.
In a triangular hosted by Collins-Maxwell, Colfax-Mingo improved to 13-5 on the season with a 58-6 win over Baxter and a 54-11 victory over the Spartans.
Junior Cyden Fitch was 2-0 with two pins on the night, freshman Gabe Gwinn rallied a big deficit to defeat Baxter’s Austin Good and junior Will Thornton picked up the first varsity win of his career for the Tigerhawks.
“That was his first varsity win ever. That was awesome,” Colfax-Mingo coach Erin Hume said. “He works hard. Will is the kid in the room who wants to be better and asks questions on how to improve. For him to get that win at the varsity level, it made me feel good.”
Baxter head coach Richard Beeler was not happy with his team’s overall performance on the night. The Bolts did defeat Collins-Maxwell 36-24 in the other dual.
It was the second dual win in program history for the Bolts and the second win this season over the Spartans.
“Tonight didn’t go the way I had planned against Colfax-Mingo, but it was nice to end the night with a win over Collins-Maxwell,” Beeler said.
“Our guys seemed a little lethargic. Our guys didn’t seem ready to go tonight. I am not sure if it was because we were back where they used to wrestle or what. We’ll have to see how they respond.”
Going 2-0 for the Tigerhawks were Cyden Fitch, Thornton, Gwinn, senior Cauy Fitch, juniors Noah Strohmeyer, Trystin Ross (23-9) and Tim Carroll and freshman Kenny Schlosser (20-9).
Cyden Fitch (18-1) recorded two pins, Cauy Fitch, Strohmeyer, Gwinn and Thornton all had one pin and took one forfeit and Schlosser and Carroll each took a pair of forfeits. Ross won his first match by forfeit and then downed Baxter’s Andrew Esqueda 9-1.
Cauy Fitch, who is ranked seventh in Class 1A at 120 pounds, is now 20-2 on the season. He pushed his career win total to 129, which is three wins off the school record of 132.
Freshman Shane Aikin took a forfeit against Collins-Maxwell, and freshman Mariah Webster and junior Hunter Green both took forfeits against Baxter.
For the Bolts (2-14), senior Ben Huff was 2-0 with two forfeits at 182 pounds. Seniors Austin Good and Andrew Esqueda, sophomore Micah Kearns and freshman Grant Borts all went 1-1.
Borts’ win came in the only contested match against Spartans. Baxter took five forfeits against Collins-Maxwell, and the Spartans were given four back.
That meant the dual came down to Borts and Collins-Maxwell freshman Jonathan Waltemeyer at 138. A Waltemeyer win by fall would give the Spartans the win by criteria, but Borts made sure that didn’t happen.
Borts controlled the match from the start and claimed a win by fall in the second period.
“Grant is a kid who started out in basketball. He decided to join us and he’s our guy at 138,” Beeler said. “He has a knack for wrestling. He’s only been doing it for three or four weeks. And this was his fourth or fifth match ever. So that was a huge win for him and for us.
“It’s bittersweet to win because we had more guys. It was nice to win the one match against them though.”
Colfax-Mingo took six forfeits against Baxter and went 4-0 in contested matches. Cyden Fitch pinned Borts at 132, Gwinn earned the fall against Good at 145 and Thornton pinned Kearns at 220. The other win was Ross’ 9-1 major decision over Esqueda.
Good (10-5) held an 11-1 lead over Gwinn, but Gwinn (13-10) rallied with a pin in the second period.
“That was awesome. We tell the kids that no matter what the points are, whether you are winning by 10 or losing by 10, you are always in it and always give yourself an opportunity,” Hume said of Gwinn. “He didn’t stop wrestling. He got on top and threw the half. He was able to secure the win and that was huge for him and huge for us.”
Beeler knew that was one that got away from his most experienced wrestler.
“He reached back and got caught. He definitely should have won that match,” Beeler said.
Collins-Maxwell (0-21) opened its dual with Colfax-Mingo with an 11-0 lead. But the Tigerhawks won the final three contested matches and took six forfeits to claim an easy win.
The Fitch brothers and Strohmeyer (18-3) all earned pins in the match.
Colfax-Mingo hosts Bondurant-Farrar and HLV for Senior Night at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Colfax. Baxter wrestles in a triangular hosted by North Mahaska at 6 p.m. on Thursday in New Sharon.
